The Marine Corps has been deployed in Madison, Alabama for over sixty years. The first Marines arrived in the city on January 8, 1942 under the command of Colonel John L. Rockwell. In 1945, Marines served in Japan during World War II and later became a part of the United States Marine Corps Reserve. The unit was activated at Fort Knox on July 1, 1951 as Headquarters and Service Company (H&S) 9th Battalion/3rd Regiment. On September 15, 1955 H&S 9th Battalion relocated to Mobile Bay Naval Base where it remained until its departure from Wisconsin on October 1, 1957. Since its relocation to Mobile Bay Naval Base, H&S 9th Battalion/3rd Regiment has earned numerous awards and distinctions including Combat Action Badge (CAB), National Defense Service Medal (NDSM), World War II Victory Medal (WWII VE), Korean War Service Medal(KWSM), Vietnam War Service Medal(VNMSM), Good Conduct Medal (GCM) and Overseas Citizens Absent Without Leave Award (OCAW). It is also famous for its "Marine Band," which was founded in 1978 as Airmen's Instrumental Group hSolomon Brothers School of Music at Gadsden State Community College by then-Captain Mike Sowell with the help of some local musicians. Captain Sowell still leads the band today as Executive Officer.
