The United States Army was founded on Nov. 12, 1775, when a small group of Americans rose against British rule in what is now Alabama. The first American soldier to fight for the new country was Capt. James Fauntleroy who fought at the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1776. The army grew rapidly and by 1801 there were over 20,000 soldiers in Madison County alone. In 1802, Gen. Andrew Jackson led an invasion of Mexico and re-took New Orleans from Spanish control which made him a national hero. In 1804, General Jackson moved his headquarters to Montgomery and the army began its expansion into central Alabama. By 1830 there were 1 million men in the US Army with responsibility for everything from guarding important ports to suppressing Indian raids across the Southeast. Military service played a significant role inMadison's history and culture. From its founding until today, Madison has been home to both an American military garrison and one of the largest centerpieces of American society – The University of Alabama (UA).
