The history of handguns in Leeds, Alabama dates back to the early 1800s. This City was founded by African American slaves in 1819 and was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had helped drive out the Creek Nation from Alabama. The first guns ever used in this area were pistols made by local blacksmiths. By the late 1800s, handguns began to be imported into Leeds from all over the United States. Many of these firearms were Model 1887 Springfield Armory rifles. It wasn't until 1911 that regulation began banning handgun sales to those under 21 years old. In response to this ban, many people turned to acquiring pistols illegally or through bootlegging. As crime rates increased in Leeds during this time, gun dealers became more important than ever before. With more people with access to Guns, there was an increase in shootings and fatalities across the city center throughout the 1920s and 1930s. In response to this problem, Mayor John Harkins passed an ordinance regulating handgun ownership and sale within city limits in 1935. Despite this regulation being passed onto us from our southern neighbor, it didn't take long for criminals and gangssters to find new ways around it- most notably through straw purchasing schemes! As a result of these problems, Mayor John Harkins repealed his ordinance two years later (1938). However, because of Chicago's influence at that time- Gun Laws remained similar throughout much of America including Birmingham-lawmakers decided not too Repeal ordinances like Harkins' as well (although some did). Throughout World War II various organisations bought weapons licences from Sheriff Harry Fenton on behalf of their countries’ military forces – typically specific arms factories would provide unique dimensions/configurations which could only be furnished with such licences (e.g., FN Herstal assault Rifles). These manufacturing options came about because restrictions on importation into the USA had been placed following WWII due largely to wartime production shortages caused by competing demands for domestic weaponry by both sides during different wars fought globally; see www2 . ncstate . edu /~paula /guns /wwii1arms/.html ). Leeds is one of the oldest communities in Marshall County and has been served by the post office since 1881. The settlement was named for Elijah Leeds, who fought in the American Civil War and died at Gettysburg. Leeds was founded on a farmstead known as Welsh Gap. A post office called Leeds was established in 1881, and remained in operation until it closed in 1930.
