During Reconstruction Period (1865-1913), many African Americans worked as agricultural laborers or asAWomen at local white households in addition to working on farms themselves. However, most black people living in rural areas did not have access to education or jobs that would allow them to participate fully in American society. During World War I (1914-1918), several thousand soldiers from Yorkshire served with distinction overseas including serving with British Expeditionary Force (BEF) at Ypres salient where they are said to have been "the bravest men ever taken into battle". After the war ended, many returning soldiers found work opportunities difficult to find and some chose insteadto return home rather than continue working on welfare plantations run by white landowners
