Jasper, Alabama is a town located in Marshall County, Alabama. Jasper was founded in 1859 by the family of John Jasper and wife Anna Stephenson. The first settlers were Andrew Johnson (1804-1865), his wife Mary Todd Lincoln (1809-1865), John Fenton (1794-1868), and their families. The community's name comes from General James Biddle's order for the burning of crops at Old Fort Morgan in 1814. That event is considered to be the beginning of Jasper County. The downtown area of Jasper was built on the site of an old slave fortification that was abandoned during Reconstruction. The fortifications served as a jail, courthouse, schoolhouse, post office, and arsenal until they were destroyed in 1901. The downtown district has been greatly renovated several times since then and now contains over 20 businesses including four banks, two churches, and three grocery stores. In 1865 Jasons voted to secede from Alabama due to concerns about Reconstruction policies implemented by Governor George Wallace. On November 3rd they held a special election to choose a new county government which resulted in the creation of Marshall County under Governor Robert Troup administration with Jasper as its seat. As a result of this secession vote, Jasper lost much of its significance within Alabama politics for many years following that date. However, it has regained some level of importance within the local community since 2000 when it became part of the newly formed Marshall County Tourism economy based around tourism attractions such as historical sites such as Old Fort Morgan and nearby restaurantsserving traditional southern cuisine
