The history of Jasper begins with two men, Samuel Phelps and John Hargrave, who arrived in what is now Marshall County on horseback in 1817. They were seeking to find new land to farm after their home country had been destroyed by sectionalism during the Revolution. The area that would become Jasper was then part of Knox County, Georgia. Phelps and Hargrave developed a gristmill on flowing Creek near where they later built their house and store. They also started trading goods with nearby MobileBayou for goods brought overland from Tennessee by traders such as Andrew Barkley and James McMurtry. Over time, other farmers began arriving in search of land to farm in this region, which eventually became known as Jasper because of its similarity to those hills seen from military lookout points at Fort Donelson or Lookout Hill on Chattanooga Heights above Nashville (now downtown Nashville). The first post office was established in 1841, but it did not operate until 1857 due to lack of infrastructure at that time. The name change came about because it sounded like something European rather than Americanized like many other communities around this time (eastern Tennessee was still under British control at this point). When white settlers movement into central Alabama increased beginning around 1870-1871 due to gold discoveries being made along the lowerMississippi River Valley floor there were calls for anti-miscegenation laws throughout much of America given increasing evidence that Northern European families were streaming into these states looking for farmland while black Americans remained effectively trapped within slavery/enslavement conditions across most Southern States at this time (although some emancipation efforts had taken place prior to 1870)). In response to growing pressure from abolitionists groups such as Joshua Speed's National Union Party - who desired an end to slavery - legislators passed resolutions denouncing all forms of racial discrimination nationwide on February 2nd, 1871 when President Ulysses S Grant delivered his State Address inside Capitol Building east side room 1504 mourning "the appalling spectacle offered before us" following reports daily leading up theretoof including African American slaves being dragged off steamboats bound for market near Memphis being auctioned off by slave traders; Little Rock Arkansas having recently become free; Kentucky Soon To Be Free; Texas Arapaho Indians having just driven out Mexican settlers numbering 10% or soiles living along East Texas border) adding insult unto injury local politicians throughout every state essentially complicity becoming punishable by law amongst themselves & future generations thereof...aka Jim Crow Laws! This event forever changed America![1] Upon learning about this development local citizens quickly organized an effort spearheaded by Methodist Preachers David Leland & Asa Paden which resulted in passage of legislation creating Jasper Municipal Corporation effective March 1st 1861 making self gov't responsible for education ($5 per capita), fire prevention ($10 per year), garbage collection ($5 per month), streetlights $2 each {!?}, water supply ($50/month) & electric lighting (every household must have one light bulb) contributing money raised through sales tax $14 collected annually went towards parks maintenance fund & construction costs needed for expanding municipal services including streetlights etcetera….. [2] By 1865 Local Citizens had raised additional funds sufficient enoughto construct jail & police department – original building cost $2700 (+$5000 expaniment) . With proper funding government could have provided public transportation system allowing easy access both intra city&intercity commerce…… [3] In 1895 when school district consolidation took place all citizens moved into newly constructed school buildings which are still used today………………………………………. [4] Today we continue our legacy as one proud community Hard working individuals willing contribute everything we can no matter how small

Jasper, Alabama is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. Jasper is located on the eastern side of Birmingham, about 15 miles east of the center of Birmingham. It is bordered by Butler to the south and Mobile to the north. The first settlers in Jasper were part of an early group that started traveling from Tennessee in 1814. They were led by General Andrew Jackson and arrived in what is now Jasper on November 25, 1814. They named their new community after James Fenton Jasper who had been killed two years earlier while leading a military expedition against Native Americans near Fort Gibson in Oklahoma Territory. The community was platted out as a post office on December 2, 1815 under the name "Jasper". The town's first store was built in 1817 and consisted of a single room with a wood-fired oven for baking goods and groceries. Aadrach Macon served as its first clerk until he resigned due to illness in 1821. By 1830, there were five stores operating within the town limits alone. In 1840, John Bledsoe became one of only two men to have ever ridden herd on horseback across America during the era; he did so overland from Texas through Oregon into British Columbia before returning home via Jasper Pass between Canada and California (now known as Hwy 50). He visited this area while surveying southern Jefferson County for his father-in-law John Capps who had purchased land east of present day Aliceville from Chief Osage Indian chief Tecumseh around 1800 BC. The first post office was established at Jasper on October 9th, 1840 by order of President James Kenedy with JB Post Office Company being formed to carry out this venture In 1861 when Alabama became part of Confederate States Of America Post office operations changed - all Confederate mail stopped going through Auburn which resulted in significant delays for citizens throughout most ofAlabama until 1865 when Union troops liberated it following battle at Selma

In 1835, Jasper was renamed for General Robert E. Lee during the Alabama- Texas War. The town's growth stopped after the war and it only regained popularity in the late 1800s as a result of its natural resources and growing agricultural sector.
