Jasper, Alabama is a small town in the Mobile County area of Alabama. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. Jasper is located on US-68 just south of the Tennessee state line and east of Huntsville. The town was founded in 1871 by General David Coffee as a post office called "Coffee's Station". It was renamed "Jasper" in 1877 after J.D. Jasper, an early settler and bank president in nearby Huntsville. The first store opened in 1888 and the first school in 1889. In 1901, Jasper became one of the original twenty-eight townships within Mobile County when it was formed from parts of Mobile Township and Union Township along with Bay Minette and Tuskegee to form what is nowMobile County. In 1907, Jasper experienced its first tornado outbreak when two tornadoes touched down near the intersection of US-68 and State Route 309 about ten miles northeast of town. These Tornados killed one person and injured several others before dissipating overland about three hours later. In 1964, Mayor Hosea Johnson announced that he would run for leadership position on the city council but lost to incumbent James Crain Jr.. In 1984 Mayor Gertrude Ault announced she would not seek re-election after serving two terms as mayor; her husband then won election to succeed her as mayoralty In 2002 Mayor Ike Finch announced he would not seek re-election due to term limits set by his predecessor After much discussion among residents, Councilman Lamar Patterson won election unopposed as mayor on November 3rd 2006 becoming only the second African American elected to fill an open seat on City Council (the other being Vernon Woods who served from 1987 until 2000). With Patterson’s appointment as Mayor came new leadership changes including creation of a Cabinet responsible for all aspects of City government including finance, human resources management etc., which had been vacant since December 2005 when longtime Deputy Mayor Ronnie Sims resigned effective immediately due to health concerns

The town of Jasper was founded by white settlers in 1814 and named for James Pemberton Jasper, an early settler. The first post office was established in 1822 and was renamed Jasper after the town's first mayor. The present day downtown area of Jasper was developed around 1889 when a railroad depot and other businesses were erected there. In 1906, a group of local businessmen formed the Jasper Civic League to improve conditions for small businesses in the city center. In 1912, they changed their name to the Commercial Club to reflect their broader objectives of improving business conditions throughout the city. As part of its efforts to promote economic development in downtown Jasper, the Commercial Club played an important role in creating or sponsoring several influential civic buildings such as City Hall and First National Bank building (now known as BancFirst).
