The Jacksonville, Alabama Navy Yard was established in 1865. The yard served as a naval depot and shipyard until it was decommissioned in the late 1940s. In 1951, the Naval Weapons Station Jacksonville was transferred to the Naval Air Reserve Fleet and renamed Jacksonville Naval Air Station. In 1959, the Naval Base Jacksonville was opened and the navy station became an operational naval airbase. In 1974, Headquarters Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Fourteen (HAMS-14) relocated from Mobile Bay to Jacksonville NAS. The squadron's mission is to maintain aircraft at naval air bases worldwide. HAMS-14 also provides services such as engineering support for naval vessels and jet fighter planes belonging to various fleets around the world. Today, Jacksonville NAS remains an important service stop for America's armed forces and their allies around the world. It offers a variety of programs that keep our sailors safe while they're on duty or training; including maritime security awareness programs that help keep our waterways free of piracy; hangar space for fighter jets; a cafeteria serving sailors with nutritional needs; and more.

Jacksonville is the largest city in bothalachia and Mobile County. It is located on the lower Gulf Coast of Alabama and bordered by Mobile Bay on the east, Baldwin County on the west, Etowah County on the north, and Calhoun County on the south. The area that now Jacksonville was first settled in 1814 by French Huguenots who named it "Jamaica". They brought over large numbers of slaves from Africa during the 18th century for work in plantations near Mobile Bay. After becoming an American territory, Jacksonville was renamed for General James Wilkinson (1786-1851), one of United States Army's generals during Seminole War (1835-1839). Wilkinson had been aide-de-camp to President George Washington when he fought against Native Americans in that conflict. In 1819 Jacksonville became part of Mobile County and later independent as a town. In 1900 Jacksonville had a population of only 10 people; it grew rapidly after that with new development including two shopping malls completed in 2002 and 2003: One downtown which serviced primarily small businesses while another off Old Marco Road served as a center for government services such as jails and other law enforcement functions until 2006 when it closed following Hurricane Katrina's landfall there; also new construction included an NFL stadium being built adjacent to Jaguars Stadium between 2005-2010 Jacksonville experienced significant growth through its early years due to its strategic location midway along Interstate 10 between Birmingham/Tuscaloosa and Decatur/Mobile/ Pensacola -- giving easy access to both major metropolitan areas then known across America. However recent economic downturns have resulted in declines in jobs throughout much of southeasternAlabama--a trend which looks set to continue into 2020 given forecasts showing continued joblessness throughout much Southern Florida after effects from Irma
