Jacksonville, Alabama is a city in the U.S. state of Alabama and the county seat of St. Clair County. Jacksonville, Alabama was founded in 1819 by General Andrew Jackson. The city was named for the Spanish town of Jacinto de la Vega on the Mobile River, which had been newly explored and claimed by Spain. The area that would become Jacksonville was part of the Creek Nation until 1818, when it became a part of the United States. By 1830, Jacksonville had a population of over 10,000 people and was one of the largest slave ports in America. In 1834, General Robert E. Lee moved his army from Petersburg to occupy Jacksonville and declared it an open-air military hospital for Confederate veterans who had served in the American Civil War. After several months of occupation, General Lee withdrew his forces from Jacksonville on December 12th, 1835. In 1861, as Confederate troops began attacking Union forces across Alabama, Jacksonville became an important strategic location between Louisville and Atlanta. On April 14th 1861, Confederate general Jubal Early attacked Union soldiers at Fort Donelson in Tennessee after their withdrawal from Chattanooga; this led to significant losses for the Confederacy and enhancedUnion morale. On May 5th 1861 (the first day of Alabama’s secession from the United States), Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing attacked Union positions at Fort Pickens while Major James Longstreet led a counterattack; this resulted in heavy losses for both sides and ended Reconstruction in Alabama. Withdrawing federal troops gradually returned all African Americans to public life throughout northern Alabama; even so there were continued efforts by Confederates to maintain control over black areas such as Jacksonville including through paramilitary activities called “ thunder raids” against black communities during World War II
