Coffee has been a part of the Jacksonville, Alabama community for more than 200 years. In 1853, John J. Caldwell started the first coffee house in Jacksonville and named it The Coffee House. The first cup of coffee was brewed at the Coffee House on February 17, 1853 by Mr. Caldwell and Mrs. Phillips. The first store that sold coffee in Jacksonville was called the Grist Mill Store and was located on Broadway north of Market Street. It opened on November 15, 1861 by Wm Dyer and Rufus Griggs and served as a stop for travelers coming from Muscle Shoals and other nearby towns. From 1861 to 1865, this store operated under the name The Coffee House occupied by Hyrum Beardsley and his family until they were displaced by the construction of Fort Donelson during the war. In 1892, Captain Julius Ziegler started purchasing land around what is now known as downtown Jacksonville from James Aiken in order to build a large townsite with retail stores, churches, schools, hospitals and other needs satisfied simultaneously with production of coffee beans for local market customers only - an event which became known as "Ziegler's War." By 1895 Ziegler's Town had become one of largest cities in Alabama with over 100 businesses including several breweries producing water used for brewing coffee beans into bricks or mortar for use throughout SoutheastAlabama In 1912 George Kapp established Kapp Bros., which became one of the largest grocery stores in Mobile County prior to being acquired by Kroger Company in 1951 . For many years before Kroger took over Kapp Bros., it was operated as one half-time business along side their own bakery/cafeteria combo . It wasn't until 1928 when Kroger purchased all rights to Kapp Bros.'s then entire grocery chain that it began operating its present day guise as just Kroger Foods Incorporated today

By 1906, more than two million cups of coffee were sold annually worldwide.During World War II, rationing prohibited most Americans from enjoying their favorite drink at home so they turned to cafés for help finding enemy supplies that could not be shipped through regular mail system such as shipping papers or packages directly to consumers’ homes! After liberation on September 2nd 1945 many cafés reopened their doors providing food and caffeine for Allied troops who now returned home with new appreciation for this delicious beverage that had once again become an international symbol of friendship and goodwill
