During the American Civil War, Company A (Jacksonville Regiment) served valiantly as part of General Robert E. Lee's army and played an important role in battle against Union troops at Bull Run, Antietam and Fredericksburg. On April 12, 1865, after three days of hard fought combat at Appomattox Court House Cemetery, Company A surrendered its arms and equipment to Union troops led by Ulysses S Grant - marking one of the most significant achievements for Confederate forces during the war. After the Civil War ended, Company A decamped for good and ceased being an active military organization in Jacksonville County until 1959 when it revived under new leadership and began participating in community functions once again. The name Jaxonne meant "place where Growth will Be constant."
