The Jacksonville, Alabama Air Force Base has a long and proud history of deploying gifts to support the military. The base was founded in 1941 as an airfield for the Tuskegee Airmen, a black aviation unit. In 1948, the Air Force activated the 1st Special Forces Group at Jacksonville, which would become one of its most famous units. The group served in many conflicts during the Cold War, including roles in Afghanistan and Cuba. In 2009, Jacksonville dedicated its Memorial Chapel to serve as a space for military members and their families to come and offer condolences following death or injury. The chapel is also open to the public for events such as funerals or memorial services.
