The Alabama National Guard has been providing law enforcement and military support to the state of Alabama since 1898. The unit was formed as part of the Militia Act of 1792, which authorized the formation of a militia in order to protect the state from Indian attacks. The National Guard was permanently organized on July 1, 1907 under the Laws of Alabama ( ch. 9 § 3 ). In 1925, the Alabama Legislature created a state militia commission that would manage and operate all state militias statewide. Huntsville is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 158,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the second largest city in Alabama and the third largest city in the southeastern United States after Birmingham and Atlanta. Huntsville is located on the west side of Mobile Bay on Mobile River, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Montgomery and 50 miles (80 km) north of Jacksonville. The area now called Huntsville was first inhabited by the Timucua tribe before it passed through to European control around 1715. The town of Huntsville was founded by James Robertson in 1805 as a trading post on what is now known as Red Road between Mobile and Pensacola. In 1827, John Chilton founded a cotton gin in Huntsville to process Indian cargoes brought overland from Georgia and Tennessee during the American Civil War. After Ulysses S Grant became president in 1865, he ordered Chilton to stop manufacturing cotton because it conflicted with Union goals for Reconstruction. In 1868, John Bell donated land near downtown for a courthouse and jail; construction began that year but local opposition delayed completion until 1871 due to financial reasons. In 1865, Jnoah Atherton organized the first African American college class at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama; enrollment increased to 100 students by 1870 thanks to aid from President Abraham Lincoln's America First Committee. By 1875, black farmers had begun buying land around downtown for plantations; white firefighters burned down some buildings desecrating Black History Month celebration there in 1895 while fighting a fire department race riotous situation that resulted in one death and dozens wounded). During World War II, many Japanese-Americans were interned here at Camp Hale although most served out their terms or were released early without any charges filed against them; however 1/2 century later there remains evidence of forced labor camps here during this time period which include interracial housing projects known as "the Haves" and "the Have nots". On November 15th 1935 Hurricane Hazel made landfall just northeast of downtownMobile pushing more than two feet (0 m) of water into homes along Red Road where many businesses were destroyed including Chilton's Cotton Gin which stood until 2009 still standing next door still processing cotton seed oil today! #HazelFriday
Huntsville was founded in 1871 by General John C. Breckinridge, who named it for the Cherokee chief or "Huntsville Chief." The town grew quickly due to its location on a major route between Montgomery and Birmingham. In 1881, Huntsville became an Alabama state capital and was renamed Birmingham.
