The Alabama Air National Guard's 141st Airlift Wing (141 AACW) is the primary airlift squadron for the city of Huntsville, Ala. It has always been an important part of local life, providing essential airlift to government and civilian functions in the area since World War II. As a result, the history of the wing and its gift history are intertwined. The wing was organized on December 1, 1942 as part of United States Army Air Forces Eastern Training Command at Maxwell Field in Montgomery, Ala. After training under RAF Heavy Ejection Plan during World War II, it became an independent unit on September 15, 1946 when it activated at Homestead-Miami International Airport in Miami, Fla. During its early years as a military flying command post for USAF Southeast Asia installations such as Andersen AFB and Kuching AB in Borneo and Singapore respectively; Headquarters 141 AACW flew more than 2,000 missions transporting cargo and passengers to/from these locations. Inactivated on October 16th 1968 with units being reassigned to other commands or disbanded until reactivated again on February 14th 1975 when Headquarters was moved from Maxwell AFB to Huntsville Municipal Airport following major renovation project which included new Hangar #1 (now home to The Aerospace Museum), New Control tower (later renumbered Tower A2) and numerous other improvements throughout the airport soon made it one of the most modern airports in Alabama. One specific contribution by HQ 141 AACW during this time was their participation in Operation Neptune's Spear - also known as "Vigilant Eagle" - which was an unsuccessful effort by South Korea against North Korea that resulted in over 60 US fatalities during Joint Task Force-Thailand escorting KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft into airspace over South Korea On October 20th 1976 while performing regular operations out of HMA Travis AFB TX ourKC-135A Stratotanker crashed near Choongam On January 6th 1978 after almost two decades without any significant missions ourKC-135A crashed near Choongam causing extensive damage including loss of all 5 crew members killing all 3 pilots

The Alabama Air National Guard's 2nd Squadron, 182nd Tactical Airlift Wing deployed a gift history unit in Huntsville on Dec. 12 to distribute Christmas gifts to military and civilian families.
