Hueytown is located in Marengo County, Alabama, on the north side of the Mobile River. The town was named after General Huey Long, who served as the Congressman from Alabama from 1931 to 1959. According to one source, Cherokees and other Indian groups were living in and around Marengo County when French traders first arrived in 1702. In 1815, a group of Creek Indians led by Captain John Marshall built a village near present-day Hueytown on land that they had acquired from the Spanish. They called their settlement "Tuskegee." In 1821, Captain James Fenton dismantled Fort Gibson and moved its cannons and stores southward along Mobile Bay for safety. He also took with him some Cherokee captives whom he paraded through town as part of his display. In 1830, General Andrew Jackson's forces burned Tuskegee without warning or provocation. This event is generally considered to have been the start of white supremacy in Alabama and subsequent policies towards Native Americans which continue up until this day. Some historians argue that Vice President Alexander Hamilton may have been behind Jackson's decision to destroy Tuskegee because it represented an opportunity for him to demonstrate his power over Native Americans - an idea that would come into play during his presidency more fully later on. Following Andrew Jackson's death in 1865,Alabama became a state under Reconstruction rule which meant that African Americans were not given full citizenship rights like whites until much later in the 20th century. As a result of this period of time there was much social upheaval within the black community throughout Alabama; however, little development occurred within Hueytown specifically due to its location within then-segregated racial boundaries . It wasn't until after World War II that any real progress was made within Hueytown specifically with regards to housing or economic opportunities for its inhabitants . Hueytown is a town in Butler County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,780 at the 2010 census. Hueytown was named for General John Huey and his brother Newton Huey. The first settler in what is now Hueytown was one Mr. Henson who arrived in 1819. A post office called "Huey" was established here on December 12, 1825 by James Fenton with the name of a general in the American Revolution who had been killed at Saratoga Springs, New York. The first store built in this area was that of Jno. Ritchie & Co., which opened October 4, 1827 on Main Street opposite present day State Alabama High School; it became an important commercial center for many years until it closed its doors due to economic factors around 1830. The town grew rapidly from its early beginnings as small settlements sprang up all over Butler County during the 1830s and 1840s as people came to trade with new arrivals on the Trail of Tears from Georgia and other parts of the southern United States. By 1847 there were more than 100 residents living in what is now Hueytown – thirty-six families plus twenty-seven slaves – making it one of the largest slave communities in pre-Civil War America. In 1849 General James Hogg's Brigade crossed over into Butler County from Alabama under cover of darkness and attackedueling Indian Indians near Whatcom Landingnear present day Ensley Dam; this event is still commemorated by a annual military reenactment held each year at Whatcom Landing Park near Ensley Dam as part of National History Month celebration During Reconstruction following the Civil War most African Americans were relocated to newly created white towns such as Mobile and Decatur while those living within Confederate territory faced restrictions including racial segregation which limited their opportunities for education and employment opportunities outside their homes until after World War II when these restrictions were lifted . In 1865 whites surrendered at Appomattox Court House resulting in most African American citizens being forced westward into concentration camps known collectively as "the Great Migration". Many businesses located within what is now Hueytown along with other rural areas east of Interstate 20 were looted or burned during this time period leaving much physical evidence behind including houses, barns, fences, crops and trees dating back to pre-Confederate times
