Clark during the American Civil War as a strategic location for Confederate forces to hold out against Union forces. After the war, General Clark donated land to the city and set up his military base there. In 1951, Hueytown became an official municipality within the U.S.Army District of Alabama. Today, Hueytown is home to over 20,000 active duty soldiers and their families. There are also numerous Reserve and National Guard units stationed in and around town. During World War II, the City of Hueytown made donations of munitions and other items to help the army fight in Europe. These items were used by both sides during the war; however, it is generally agreed that most of these supplies were turned over by Mayor John Ahern to General George Patton’s Seventh Armored Division on December 12th 1944 after they liberated Bastogne from Nazi occupation. The gift from Mayor Ahern was one of many examples of civic cooperation between local businesses and government entities during World War II. Many citizens took subscriptions or volunteered their time to help with various aspects of army life- such as supplying ammunition boxes or sorting food for distribution back home (a task which still Ongoes today).
