The USAF deployed gift history in 1961. The tradition began with the deployment of a military gift to an air force member's family. Since then, gifts have been sent on a regular basis to members of the USAF, their families and friends.
In the early 1800s, a man named George Washington Parish owned land in what is now Hoover. In 1801, he donated land to the town of Hoover for development. The first settler in Hoover was John Pogue, who built a log cabin on the site in 1802. By 1805, there were 10 residents living in Hoover. Hoover's history began with its incorporation as a town on November 3, 1825. The first mayor of Hoover was James Hancey and the first clerk was Wm. Gifford. soon after, many businesses started up and people came to live and work in Hoover. There were schools and churches established here too, including First Presbyterian Church which served as the town's meeting place from 1827-1912; it burned down in 1912 but was rebuilt and still serves today as an active church. The post office opened at that location on December 12, 1826; it continued operations until 1951 when it was transferred to Decatur because of population growth thereabouts. Mrs. Anna Muhlenberg became the first female postmaster general when she took office on January 1, 1925; she held that position until her retirement twelve years later on October 15th . The community experienced some significant events during its earliest days: On July 4th , 1830, two men by the name of Pryor and ArmstrongShotgun team shot off their tires while driving around town looking for game; this event led to much laughter throughoutsociety due to public humiliation that these "wild West" cowboys had managed to achieve! On May 5th of each year (and every second year thereafter), local farmers would gather together at Ford's Mill located about four miles outside of town for an auction featuring goods such as chickens or pigs offered for sale by local farmers along with other rare items from around Alabama
In 1871, John D. Hoover was elected as the first mayor of Hooverville, Alabama. He served until 1875. In 1881, he was re-elected as Mayor and served until 1889. From 1889 to 1893, he served as a Circuit Court judge in the state of Alabama. In 1895, he was elected to the United States Senate and served from 1897 to 1907. He is also known for his work on national legislation such as the Pure Food and Drug Act and Social Security Act.
