Fresh roasted coffee has been a part of the Homewood community for over 50 years. The first beans were ground and roasted by Mr. Pritchett in 1963. Homewood Coffee was founded in 1912 as a small bean shop on the corner of Union and Park Streets. The first coffee beans were roasted and ground on the premises. In 1934, Mr. and Mrs. John Hargrave opened their own roasting house on Union Street, which remains in business to this day. Homewood Coffee has been family-owned and operated for over 100 years!
Homewood is a small town located in Montgomery County, Alabama. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Montgomery County and one of the two cities (the other being Centreville) in Montgomery County. The ZIP code for Homewood is 36453. The first settler in what would become Homewood was David Hartsfield, who arrived there on July 4, 1817. By 1830, there were about 25 families living here. In 1837, Elijah White settled here and founded Whatley Academy which became one of the leading schools in Alabama during that time period. During World War II, much of Homewood's heavy manufacturing activities took place at nearby Axis munitions plants; these plants closed after the war but have left their mark on both downtown businesses and architecture throughout the community.

In America, coffee was introduced to New England in 1776 by John Adams. Coffee became an important commodity in America, and roasting plants were established throughout the country. The French Revolution led to a decline in coffee prices and production across much of Europe. However, due to increased demand from America for its beans, coffee production resumed during the 19th century throughout much of North America. Roasting plants were again established during this time period for both American and European markets. The early 20th century saw a resurgence in coffee production worldwide as World War I began to cause lower world prices for goods related to caffeine (such as sugar) which lead to an increase in bean consumption around the world. During World War II, many countries were dependent on Allied forces for their food supply; these countries required high-quality coffees that would not spoil quickly after being delivered overseas. As a result of this requirement, all belligerents agreed upon common standards for freshRoastedCoffeebeans within each theater of war (although very different standards existed within different theaters). This helped ensure that quality control was maintained among all participants in hostilities thus preventing any negative consequences resulting from inconsistentbean quality or presence abroad

Alabama was first settled by the Alaksas in the late 1700s. In 1819, the state was created from parts of Georgia and Tennessee. The name Alabama comes from the Creek word "alak" meaning "a place where trees grow." The area that is now known as Homewood was part of Milledgeville Township, which was named after General James Macon's plantation in Coffee County, Kentucky. During the American Civil War, many soldiers from Alabama fought for Confederate States troops. Some of these soldiers were members of Homewood's Union Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment. The battalion numbered about 160 men and served under Colonel John Ladd at Petersburg, Virginia during the war. Afterward, many of these men went on to serve in various positions within the Confederacy including General Robert Ewell's army at Gettysburg. In 1865, when Reconstruction began in America following the end of the Civil War, Alabama became a key player. Governor George Wallace declared martial law in Birmingham because he felt that Reconstruction was not working well for black citizens. This led to open race riots throughout much of southern Alabama which ended with over 100 deaths and hundreds injured. Aftermath of Reconstruction saw African Americans become increasingly disenfranchised and violence erupted between them and white residents alike. This period is known as "the Great Birmingham Race Riot." In 1974, Homewood voters approved a referendum calling for segregated schools within their city limits- an idea that would come full circle 20 years later when racial segregationist politicians reinstated segregated schools within their own jurisdictions
