The Coast Guard has been in charge of patrolling the Alabama coastline since 1917. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect life and property, and provide humanitarian assistance when needed. In Homewood, the Coast Guard Station was established in 1951. The station provides basic services such as law enforcement, search and rescue, environmental protection, and public safety. In 2007, the Coast Guard Station in Homewood opened a new annex which houses an operations center for the Harbor Patrol Unit as well as a command post for Search and Rescue missions. Additionally, the annex provides storage for law enforcement gear as well as space for a variety of other uses including military barracks. Homewood is a small, rural community in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. The name "homewood" comes from the Choctaw word ḫẓếwôd meaning "humble place." The first settler of Homewood was George Stephenson in 1814. The community stands on a small rise overlooking the Chattahoochee River and is bordered by Slaughter Road to the south, Old Hwy 21 to the west, and Coal Hill Road to the north. It is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Birmingham and 10 miles (16 km) southeast of Tuscaloosa. The town began as a farming village with only a few houses built in 1836. In 1868, homesteaders founded what became known as Schoolcraft Village which grew into one of Birmingham's most important neighborhoods. By 1910, Homewood had reached its current size with over 12 thousand residents. During World War II, Homewood played an important role in manufacturing munitions for the B-29 Superfortress bombers that flew over Japan during World War II. Today many businesses have been closed down due to economic decline but there are still some active businesses that support local agriculture and manufacturing including a poultry farm and two grocery stores. In recent years there has been an effort to revive interest in Homewood by creating new parks and making changes to streetscape infrastructure such as resurfacing roads and painting them green for summer use instead of yellow for winter use. There also has been development nearby such as Chilton Farms which features shopping malls and residential developments

The town was named after General James Hogg (1768-1835), one of the founders of Mobile County, Alabama. Hogg was a general during the War of 1812 and was also a member of Congress from Alabama in 1819-24. Homewood experienced some rough times during the late 1800s and early 1900s. For example, it was hit hard byollerism - which means that businesses operated without licenses or permits - which caused many buildings to be destroyed or lost their tenants. However, despite these challenges, Homewwood continued to grow and thrive until World War II when it became part of Nazi Germany. After World War II ended, Homewood slowly regained its former prosperity thanks to various investments and development projects spearheaded by its current Mayor/Councilmembers. Today,HomEWOOD remains an important community with vibrant cultural experiences and economic opportunities that attract people from all over Alabama and beyond!
In 1871, Homewood was a small community of about hundred people. It stood on the banks of the Mobile River and consisted of a few houses and a few acres of land. The town was named after General James H. Carver, who grew up in nearby Muscle Shoals. In 1865, Carver's brother-in-law, Dr. John Ladd, opened an inn in Homewood which became known as the "Ladd House." By 1870, there were about thirty residents in Homewood. By 1880, the population had increased to over one hundred people and by 1890 it had grown to over two thousand people.
