The first policemen arrived in Helena in 1827 and the first law enforcement officer was named Deputy Sheriff John Sibley. In 1865, the city of Helena hired its first full-time police officer under the leadership of Major General James W. Armstrong. By 1909, there were 11 sworn officers working for the city and it was decided that a departmental store be built to house all of the confiscated weapons and equipment from sheriff's departments across the state. On December 5th, 1909, Mayor J.C. Barkley dedicated the new department store which became known as "The Police Department Store." In 1951, when a new municipal building was constructed downtown on Main Street, it was decided that an armory be added to the police department structure. It wasn't until 1969 when a new station house was erected on Third Avenue that law enforcement activity could really take off in Helena! This facility is still used today by our officers and is also home to our crime prevention center which helps keep Helena safe during daytime hours as well as at night when needed!

Helena is a small town in Alabama, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Huntsville-Decatur-Alabaster metropolitan area. Helena is the seat of Talladega County and lies within Decatur County. The first settler in Helena was James Fenton in 1830. The first store was established by David Hill in 1836. Helena experienced its boom years during World War II when many companies moved to the town for work in the defense industry. Today, Helena has a strong agricultural sector and some small businesses are still active such as The Keg River Brewery and Bicentennial Chevrolet dealership. There are two churches serving Helena: First Baptist Church and Second Baptist Church both founded in 1892. There are also several libraries including one dedicated to history, culture, and education that opened in 1995 called the Historical Library at Higgins Park on Main Street. A post office called Helena was established in 1868, but it closed operation due to lack of customers. A new post office called Helena (aluminium content) was open from 1984 until it closed effective July 16, 2009 due to changes made to Postal service regulations following the September 11th terrorist attacks which caused mail delivery delays throughout much of America's southeast region.

Helena, Alabama is located in the Gulf coast of Alabama, about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Mobile. In 1819 Helena was founded by settlers from Georgia and named for General George Armstrong Custer. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal, oak trees, lumber and cotton plantations. Helena prospered until the late 1800s when a combination of factors - a lack of industry and population growth; railroad construction; disease outbreaks; and Indian raids - caused the town's decline. In 1910 Helena was incorporated as a city under the name of Birmingham. During World War II Helena served as headquarters for Army Air Forces operations in southern Alabama. After the war Helena experienced rapid growth as an industrial center with heavy involvement in agricultural production and education. The city reached its peak during the 1960s through its economy-oriented planning which led tothe nickname "The City That Took Care Of Itself." However, recent economic hardships have lead to significant reductions in both employment and tax receipts.
