The National Guard of Helena, Alabama was organized on July 5, 1861. The Helena National Guard was initially composed of men from the town of Helena and surrounding areas. The guard first fought in the American Civil War as part of the 1st Alabama Infantry Regiment under Confederate General Jubal Early. In 1865, the Helena National Guard was disbanded and its members were transferred to other units in the Confederate army. In 1868, a new unit called the Arkansas Militia was organized in Helena and it soon became evident that this militia would be very necessary in light of increasing Reconstruction activity in Alabama. The Arkansas Militia served until 1871 when it resigned due to lack of support from Governor John B. Crittenden. When Goldsborough County seat moved to Birmingham in 1873, the Helena Guardsmen were one of two units reactivated within that county for military purposes. This lasted until 1895 when all remaining volunteer regiments were disbanded withinAlabama due to state budget cuts caused by President Grover Cleveland's New Deal policies. The Helena Guardsmen re-formed on October 1, 1925 as a full-time military force with headquarters located at 4200 Highway 64 East Suite 202 in downtown Helena. On May 12, 1932, following completion of World War II and repeal of Prohibition, the original nucleus (minus officers) reorganized into a static battalion equipped with M2 Carbines and Waco Machine Guns which hiked out into nearby Cullman County for maneuvers during WWII known as Battle Mountain Park operations. On September 20th 1945 while still attached to Troop C Company 3rd Battalion 506th Airborne Division Combat Team providing security for president Truman's Carpet Cleaning Service trip through central Alabama he received an order from General George C Marshall commanding U S Army Forces Europe via Major General Curtis LeMay ordering all forces stop at Mobile Bayou near Tampa beach pending instructions about what should be done with atomic bomb plants northward along Gulf Coast It has been said that if [George] C Marshall had not ordered us home, we may have become POWs like Hiroshima victims.
