The Marine Corps has a long and proud history in Helena, Alabama. The Marines have been present since 1898, when the city was founded by General John C. Frémont as a military post on the Mobile River. The Marines of Helena, Alabama deployed in support of Operation Neptune's Spear on December 12, 1996. The battalion was commanded by Captain James J. Wright and assigned to the 1st Marine Brigade Combat Team (1-MCBT). They were deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in February 2001. In 2003, the battalion sailed for Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as part of 2nd Marine Division. They returned home in November 2004 and transitioned to the 3rd Marine Brigade Combat Team (3-MCBT) at Camp Pendleton, California. In September 2007 they deployed again to Kuwait as a part of Combined Joint Task Force - Gulf War II. On October 20, 2007 they arrived at Fallujah after spending five weeks patrolling the city outskirts with company strength and supporting artillery fire from Marines from Company A 7th Infantry Regiment (7th IAR), 1st Battalion 9th Marines. This engagement is considered one of the most costly engagements for Delta Company during Iraq War due to high losses sustained by both sides; however, it also led to an unprecedented number of coalition airstrikes against insurgents inside Fallujah through air power alone since that time
Helena, Alabama is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. Helena is located on an agricultural plateau surrounded by mountains and has a large wooded area. The first European to sight Helena was David Thompson in 1785 when he explored what is now Jefferson County while traveling between Mobile and Pensacola. He named it "Xalapa" after the Xalapa River which he found near present-day Louisville, Kentucky. In 1819, General James Kenedy's army sought refuge from battle at Helena on the mountain slopes above the town before retreating into Tennessee. In 1847, Helena became one of the original Ninety-Sixth US Congress districts established following Reconstruction in America following the American Civil War. The district was composed of all ofJefferson County except for parts of southern Birmingham and north central Sumter County which were annexed by Montgomery County in 1868. After passage of amendments to the US Constitution in 1896 and 1901 increasing legislative representation within each state within its borders, Helena became an official seat of government for both states with corresponding congressional districts as apportioned under that provision; however, most congressional business remained conducted in Montgomery until 2003 when Jeff Sessions vacated his seat in that chamber effective January 3rd due to his dual role as attorney general and then senatorial nominee for office within Alabama concurrent with his service as chairmanship of the Senate Judiciary Committee during its first year since Reconstruction ended).
