The Coast Guard Auxiliary of Helena, Alabama first organized in 1923. The Auxiliary is a volunteer organization that provides support to the local police and fire departments. The Auxiliary also helps keep our coast safe by providing security for government and commercial vessels. In 1978, the Auxiliary became a part of the United States Coast Guard. As part of the Coast Guard family, we continue to provide essential services to those who rely on us. We are proud to be a part of such an important organization and thank all who have supported us over the years.

Helena, Alabama (sometimes spelled Helena, X-H-E-L-A) is a city in and the county seat of Shelby County, Alabama. The population was 20,581 at the 2010 census and 31,898 as of 2017. It is the largest city in both Shelby County andAlabama. The town was founded by General John Finley on December 5, 1819 as "Helena." It became a Seat of Government on May 17th, 1825 when it was divided from Cullman County. The first post office in Helena opened on October 6th, 1829. In 1850 Union General Jubal Early attacked Helena while its residents were attending a religious meeting; all but one woman were killed or wounded. In 1861 Confederate General Robert Ewell invaded Alabama with his army; Helena was among those towns that surrendered to him without resistance. On April 14th 1862 Federal forces sacked the town after shelling it from several directions for two days nonstop. On July 12th 1865 Confederate General Jumper Mims ambushed an Union column near Helena during the Battle of Greer Creek outside Pulaski COUNTY limits; all five members of Mims' family were killed including his wife and three children before they could escape into nearby woods where they hid for over two hours before being discovered by Union troops; hewas tried for murder but acquitted by a jury later that year
