Helena, Alabama is home to the United States Air Force's 1st Wing, which is responsible for providing airlift and strategic bombardment services in the Huntsville-Decatur area. The wing was established on October 25, 1951 as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron of the 9th Bombardment Group (Heavy). The wing was redesignated as 1st Wing on May 15, 1966 when it became part of the newly created Fifth Air Force. The wing served inactivated on August 16, 1991 when its forces were transferred to Tactical Air Command. On October 25, 1951, Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron of the 9th Bombardment Group (Heavy) relocated from Mobile to Helena and activated under First Lieutenant General John S. "Jock" Armstrong's command. From its inception until it was inactivated on August 16, 1991, 1st Wing operated out of Lambert Field Airport in Helena. Inactivated units that are still active include: 1-HG/9 BGF; 2-HG/9 BG; 3-HG/9 BW; 4-HG/19 BW; 5-TAC HQ & HQ SBW [1]; 6-[TAC]-Fighter Command Support Squadron [2]; 7-[TAC]-Tactical Air Command Advisory Group [3]. Helena, Alabama is a town in Autauga County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,475 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Birmingham–Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Helena is located on State Route 20 east of Hoover and north of Auburn. The first settler in Helena was James Avant who came to Helena in 1819 from Mobile, Alabama. The first post office in Helena was established in 1827 and was called "Avery". In 1834, the post office moved to "Athens" because the original Avery home had been destroyed by fire. In 1861, when Mississippi seceded from the United States and became Confederate Territory, Helena became part of this new state and its post office changed to "Birmingham". After the Civil War ended in 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House near Shelbyville and most of ConfederateAlabama went into Union hands. However, Helena continued to be a part of ConfederateAlabama until it finally fell on April 9th 1865 when Union forces loyal to Ulysses S. Grant burned all remaining Confederates'property within our town limits-a victory that many found ironic given Helen's strategic location just outsideof Birmingham

In 1995, the airforce gifted a KC-135 Stratotanker tanker plane to Saudi Arabia after their war with Yemen began successfully. In 2000, the USAF gifted an F-15 Eagle fighter jet to India after their war with Pakistan started unsuccessfully. In 2002, they gifted a C-130 Hercules transport plane to Thailand after their war with Cambodia ended successfully. And finally, in 2006, they gifted a Cessna 172 Caravanjet passenger airliner to Bahrain after their war with Oman began unsuccessfully
