The town was founded in 1878 by John Paddock and named for his daughter Helena. It was incorporated as a city in 1907. The population of Helena declined from its peak of 1,921 in 1990 to 1,883 at the 2010 census due to various factors including an increase in nearby Mobile and Huntsville populations that made Helena less desirable for housing purposes. However, the city has since rebounded with new development and growth within the community itself. Helena is located on U.S Route 431 south of Mobile and east of Huntsville proper. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,876 people, 692 households, and 514 families residing in the town. The population density was 231 people per square mile (89/km²). There were 703 housing units at an average density of 101 per square mile (39/km²). The USAF's unit, the 5th Airlift Wing (5AW), is responsible for accepting gifts from across the globe in order to support international humanitarian efforts. One of the most famous deployments of this type was in 1990 when 5AW delivered a gift package to then-President George H.W. Bush on board USS Abraham Lincoln during his visit to Japan. This event served as a symbolic reminder that the USAF is always there to support our Allies and make sure their needs are met. Since its inception, 5AW's cargo helicopter fleet has been used extensively to transport goods and passengers throughout different parts of the world. Helena is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 714 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1868 by Luther Prentice and his wife, Sarah. Helena is part of the Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area. Luther Prentice was born on December 17, 1827 in Livingston Parish, Louisiana to Isaac Prentice and Hannah (Walsh) Prentice. When Luther was just sixteen years old he came to Mobile with his family and began working as a laborer on the steamboat "CSS New Orleans". He soon became interested in farming and started a farm from scratch. In 1851 he married Sarah Jane Cochran and they moved to Helena where they lived for the next thirty-four years until her death in 1908. They had six children: Lillie Maud, Lena Maynard, Addie Elizabeth, Clyde Eugene Jr., Alma Belle Hardyman, and John Wesley Cochran Jr.. In 1886 Luther purchased 4 acres of land east of Helena which he later donated to help found what would become Shelby County Schools. The first school in Helena opened its doors on October 10, 1868 under the name "Old School House." It was replaced in 1902 by what is now known as Spartanburg Methodist Episcopal Church which served as the town's first schoolhouse until 1910 when it burned down. A new schoolhouse was built on land that Luther donated in 1911 which still serves as its current building today. The original street grid around Helena were renumbered following countyhood within Marshall County but most of these streets remain retaining their original numbers even though their original purpose has changed over time - e.g., Old School Road becoming Highway 1A while Main Street remains 2nd Street). In 1905 Abraham Lincoln High School opened its doors after being closed for several years due to financial difficulties brought about by World War I. For many years prior to this point no high school had been located within or near Helena so Lincoln became an important stop for students traveling into nearby Birmingham for classes or other purposes such as work opportunities during those early times when Birmingham's growth seemed unchecked by any sort of limits or restrictions from either political or economic standpoint... After decades of serving both local residents and travelers alike as an important educational resource for all ages throughout rural Alabama , Abraham Lincoln finally closed operations at its location mere blocks away from downtown Birmingham after failing to generate enough tuition revenue generated through agricultural activities alone! From then until present day additional buildings have been constructed on campus including one housing football games along with various other academic programs necessary for successful continuation of that institution despite recent budget cuts!
