Hartselle is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,494 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. It is located on U.S. Route 231 north-northwest of Mobile and on the edge of Fayetteville Township. Hartselle was founded in 1872 by Hartselle native James Auld as a trading post on the Sabine River. The name "Hartselle" may be derived from French "hauter le chêne," meaning to higher the tree or to make an increase in production from one's land holdings. In 1881, John Witherspoon opened a mercantile business in what is now the town square and named it Hartselle after himself and his family. In 1902, JMW Hartsfield erected a large white cotton gin and built a millrace that still serves as its namesake today; this event helped spur development in the town center which included new businesses, residences, churches and other public buildings over time. In 1923, when Mobile was consolidated with Jefferson County to form Alabama's new state government under Govt Moore,[4] Hartselle became one of only two towns (the other being Decatur) withinJefferson County that did not become part of Mobile proper (the others being Fort Payne).[5] The county seat moved fromMobile to Montgomery in 1927[6] but Hartselle continued to grow slowly until World War II spurred industrial growth which accelerated during World War II when many African Americans were drafted into military service and then housed throughout northeast Alabama nears Detroitport Naval Air Station where theyWorked manufacturing jobs for General Motors.[7][8][9][10] This expansion led to increased housing prices,[11][12] joblessness rates[13], negative environmental impact[14],[15],[16], crime,[17],[18], while also contributing $175 million (in 1990 dollars)to State government coffers through local property taxes ($24 per capita)[19]) since 1945! Hartselle was a small town in Alabama before the turn of the century. It was located on the Talladega River and had a population of around 100 people. Hartselle's early history is intertwined with that of nearby Tuskegee and Selma. Timeline: 1848- In 1848, Hartselle was platted as a village by John C. Dandridge and others in what is now Talladega County. 1870- At the time of its incorporation, Hartselle had a population of 85 residents. 1902- Hartselle became an unincorporated community within Vestavia Hillsborough County when that county was created from parts of Talladega and Pickens counties. 1959- The first school in Hartselle opened up in 1902. It eventually closed due to lack of students and reopened as part of Vestavia Hillsborough High School in 1959.

They built a log cabin and started trading with other farmers and traders. In 1829, they bought land east of present-day Hartselle and began to build a cotton gin. The town grew quickly and by 1830, it had a population of 150 people. By 1835, it had reached 500 people. In 1850, the Hartselle Railroad was completed and the town became an important transportation hub. It continued to grow until the early 21st century when it experienced significant decline due to economic factors such as population loss and increased commuting within nearby cities.
