Hartselle is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Marshall County and lies on the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains. The first permanent settler in Hartselle was James Lunsford in 1819. The present town was organized in 1872 by Wm. Gentry and named for General John Custer, who had died during the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1872, and it remained open until 1906. The present post office building was built in 1907 and dedicated by Mayor Sallie A. Duncan with proceeds from a local auction of selectman's items that year. The building has been used as a public school since 1918 and now houses the county courthouse. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,711 people, 538 households, and 356 families residing in the town. The population density was 133 people per square mile (52/km²). There were 684 housing units at an average density of 60 per square mile (24/km²). Bigham founded the Hartselle Cotton Gin and Produce Company which became one of the largest cotton gin companies in America until it merged with US Steel in 1960. Bigham also founded the Hartselle Hospital which served as both a hospital and clinic for local residents until it closed in 1974. Hartselle also had a railroad station which served as an important transportation link between the town and nearby Birmingham during this time period
