Hartselle was founded in 1868 as a post office named Hartselle by Simeon Hartselle and others. It was renamed to its current name in 1907 after General John C. Frémont, who had played an important role in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of California. The first post office building in town was built on the corner of Third Street and Second Avenue in 1868. It burned down in 1869; but a new post office building was erected on Third Street and First Avenue soon afterward. The first settlers were farmers who came from Tennessee about 1840s to help build up what would become Jefferson County. By 1860 there were more than 100 residents living in the area that would eventually become Hartselle proper. Most of these people were mechanics or laborers who used their land for farming or cattle raising until they became landowners around 1870 when slavery ended throughout most of America west of the Ohio River except Missouriwhere it continued until 1865 due to international treaties signed at Paris between France and Mexico regarding western boundaries

Between 1881 and 1886, four churches were built in or near Hartselle: First Baptist Church (1881), Methodist Episcopal Church (1885), Presbyterian Church (1886) and Independent Order of Odd Fellows Zion Chapel (1887). After traveling through many states visiting various locations before settling down in Alabama, Abraham Lincoln visited Hartselle on October 10–11, 1892 while campaigning for election as President of the United States. Lincoln gave a public address at First Baptist Church located just east of downtownHartselle before continuing his tour through central Alabama Heading into Mobile he stopped at Union Depot where he met General Ulysses S Grant who drove him back north to Montgomery
