Hartselle is a small town located in Jefferson County, Alabama. The population was 5,246 at the 2000 census. The ZIP Code for Hartselle is 36207. The community was named after Capt. John Hartselle, who fought in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. He served as a Major in the Confederate Army and later became a Judge Advocate General in the Confederate States of America. Hartselle was founded by German immigrants in 1851 as a farmstead on Hwy 6 south of present day Tuscaloosa. It was originally called "Hartzell" and "Hartenell". In 1881, it changed its name to "Hartselle", based on Captain John Hartselle's victory over an invading Indian force at what is now known as Old Fort Payne Rd.. In 1907, the first post office opened in Hartselle with mail delivered by wagon from Tuscaloosa via Highway 442 to nearby Cisco City. By 1912, there were six homes in town with one store and two schools; however, all businesses closed during World War I because of wartime restrictions on trade with Europe. reopened after the war but closed again during prohibition period 1917-1920 due to lack of business opportunity In 1928, Hartselle had three churches: Methodist (built 1927), Baptist (1927) and Presbyterian (1929). All three denominations moved their services to larger facilities within town beginning around that time which continued into the 1940s when all three denominations merged into one church called First Presbyterian Church of Hartselle Incorporated which still exists today . This merger left many smaller communities scattered throughout Jeffco County including those near Tuscaloosa followed by closures/merging over time until only two remaining towns remain - Hartselle & Waldoville

The first post office in Hartselle was established in 1823 and served as an interim stop for mail between nearby Decatur and Mobile. In 1836, the town had its own government with a Mayor and five Councillors. The town square was also developed at this time with several stores, homes, churches, schools, and jail being constructed around it. In 1840, the population of Hartselle reached 100 residents which increased to 300 by 1850. By 1860, the population had decreased to 50 residents due to numerous factors such as annexations from neighboring towns and advances in railroads that made shipping more efficient. However, during Reconstruction when Alabama lost its independence from Unionism following the Civil War, Hartselle experienced significant growth thanks to new businesses opening up such as banks and hotels that attracted workers who were needed for reconstruction projects such as rebuilding infrastructure along the Red River Towpath corridor. During this time period there were also three high schools which educated students fromHartselle: Hartsville Academy (opened in 1853), Camden Academy (opened in 1865), and Tuskegee Airmen High School (opened in 1927). This growth led to many businesses closing down over time due to competition from larger towns orIntroduction of new technologies like television that made goods more affordable which discouraged people from coming back to old-fashioned villages like Hartselle where prices remained stagnant for years after introduction of new technology
The town of Hartselle was founded in 1871 by Levi D. Hartselle and his wife, Emma. The town grew quickly and soon had a school, post office, store, and other businesses. In 1912, the town built its first hospital which served the area until it closed in 1969. TheHartselle Steel Company was founded in 1916 and became one of the largest steel companies in Alabama. The company went bankrupt in 1929 but was reformed three years later and continued to operate until it filed for bankruptcy again in 1984.
