He served as commanding officer until 1912 when he became acting commander for two years until finally taking command permanently on May 1, 1916. During World War II, Hartselle had a total population of over 30,000 people and it played an important role in the war effort by providing security along the Gulf of Mexico and its shorelines. In 1945, following World War II, Hartselle celebrated its centennial with a series of festivities including a parade through downtown followed by a dinner at Legion Hall featuring speeches from Governor George Horman and Mayor Harry Kappeler. In recent years, Hartselle has seen continued growth as a center for commerce and culture with several large businesses opening up shop hereabouts including Barnes & Noble bookstore chain and Lowe’s home improvement store among others. The Hartselle Coast Guard Station was established in 1881 and the present station is located on the mouth of the Alabama River. The original buildings were erected in 1887. The current station is a two-story, wood frame structure with a gabled roof. It has a single story extension to the rear which was added in 1907. The original building had a small shed on its front porch for storage. In 1917, the present building was built as part of an expansion project for the coast guard station.
Hartselle is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Birmingham metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Hartselle were three men from Denmark who arrived on horseback in 1795. They named their new community "Osterfeld". A post office was established at Hartselle in 1807, and the town grew rapidly until it had a population of 5,000 by 1840. The cotton industry played an important role in Hartselle's growth during the 19th century; businesses such as Canned Heat (1860-1930), Pigeon Forge Coal Mining Co. (1872-1920), and American Tobacco Company (1893-1970) operated out of the town. In 1930, General Motors Corporation built its largest manufacturing plant to date in Hartselle; this led to increased business for local businesses and helped fuel the towns growth into the 21st century. Today, Hartselle is home to several small businesses and a variety of cultural attractions including museums, art galleries, theatres and libraries.

Hartselle began as an agricultural center with rice farming being the mainstay of the economy until after World War II when other industries such as aluminum production took hold. After that time, Hartselle slowly regained some economic stability through various business ventures before becoming more known for its tourist attractions in the 1990s and 2000s. Today, Hartselle is home to a few dozen households and is an important stop on highway 442 corridor between Tuscaloosa and Decatur counties. Its location makes it close to both rural communities as well as larger towns such as Selma and Tuskegee University; making it an important part of local culture and history
