Gardendale, Alabama is a small town located in DeKalb County, Alabama. It was founded in 1871 and has since been the home of the United States Air Force's 5th Regional Command. The community is also home to 10 Wright-Patterson Air Force Base military installations, which include three Bombardier Dash 8 jets. The history of the 5th Regional Command began with the activation of 64d Wing at Wright-Patterson AFB on 1 October 1944. The wing was responsible for providing airlift support to troops in World War II and postwar campaigns across Europe and Asia. Inactivated on 1 September 1947, it was reactivated as elements of 3d USAF Region (later First AF) on 15 October 1951. At this time it consisted of two wings: 64d Wing and 93d Wing which were both activated from components of 4th USAF Region (later Third AF). The wing's first assignment was to provide aerial refueling support for III Tactical Air Command bombers during Operation Desert Storm on 20 April 1990. On 17 May 1992, upon activation of 5th Regional Command - Mediterranean Theater - 615th Airlift Squadron (Air Refueling) was transferred from Dyess AFB Texas to Gardendale AFB as part of a reassignment process following the end of Gulf War hostilities. This marked the first time an operational squadron from Dyess had been assigned permanently to a Fifth RegionalCommand station since its activation on 16 August 1945 when Headquarters Eighth Air Forces activated Detachment A-1 at England AFB Louisiana under commandof Ninth Air Force with initial assignment to Fifteenth Army Group headquarters in Rome Italy within Ninth AF.. Withdrawn from active duty on 30 June 1995 after 35 years it reverted back to inactive status until 31 December 1999 when it re-activated at Gardendale AFB with new mission statement "Enhancement Of United States Military Presence In The Mediterranean And Near East Areas" Inactivated but not retired: 84f Troop Carrier Squadron (Air Refueling)

Military deployed gift history in Gardendale, Alabama begins with the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1944, the United States Marine Corps was activated and began deploying Marines to Okinawa. From 1945-1946, the United States Army's 7th Infantry Division served in Germany as part of Operation Paperclip. The Seventh Infantry Division's commanding officer was General George Silliman who had been transferred from Headquarters 9th Infantry Division in 1945 and became Commanding General for the Seventh Infantry Division on 1 July 1946. On 3 October 1946, General Silliman was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and took command of brigade sized units throughout Alabama including the 2nd Brigade at Gardendale which became known as "The 2nd Battalion, Seventh Infantry Regiment."
Gardendale is a small town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Mobile–Tensaw–Ft. Morgan, Alabama Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Gardendale was the French explorer and missionary Pierre Le Moyne de La Salle in 1685. In 1819, Captain John Fenton and his party arrived with news of a rich gold mine near present-day Gardendale. A post office was established at Gardendale in 1825, and a printing press was set up in 1828. In 1863, Confederate General Robert Ewell's army passed through Gardendale on their way to Gettysburg. Many people from Gardendale fought for the Confederacy during the war; some were killed or captured while others fled to Mobile or other adverse locations. After the war ended, many residents returned home and began rebuilding their homes and businesses after reconstruction efforts were started by federal troops under General Sherman. The community experienced another boom following World War II when many veterans returning home founded businesses on Quitman Street and elsewhere in town. The population peaked at 2,000 in 1960 but has since dropped below 1,500 due to various social and economic factors including suburban development around town as well as loss of jobs throughout Jefferson County over the past few decades

Gardendale is a town in Marshall County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,419 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Marshall County. The name comes from early French settlers Gardener and meaning "wooden bridge". The first settler at Gardendale was John Fenton who arrived in 1814. He built a cabin on the banks of the Mobile River. In 1816, he married Sarah Bledsoe and moved to what is now Gardendale. Fenton's cabin still stands today and is a museum piece. In 1824, General Andrew Jackson visited Gardendale and noted its beauty in his diary: "A fine place I have seen here – well wooded with high hills all around it." In 1830, James Colbert settled on land that became part of Gardendale. Colbert had come from Tennessee and farmlands in Marshall County were being sold off for cotton plantations. When he heard about the availability of land inMarshall County he bought it and founded Colbert Farms which grew into one of the largest cotton plantations in Alabama during this time period. In 1835, Judge John Ladd purchased land west of Gardendale from Colter for $1 million dollars which made him one of the wealthiest men in Alabama at that time. He donated many acres to town development as well as building several schools and churches throughout his life including First Baptist Church (now known as Unity Chapel), Presbyterian Church (now known as Christ Episcopal) and Holmes-Ladd Tower School (now known as Vestavia Hills Elementary). One reason why Gardendale developed so quickly during this time was because courthouse business quickly outgrew the original courthouse on Main Street which was only built two years earlier by Captain Elijah Ewing Sr.. Captain Elijah Ewing Sr., also an early settler at Gardenville Village located east of downtown Gardendale served as both Township Clerk for Marshall County until his death in 1865 then filled same position for three more years under Judge John Ladd before retiring to live near family members until his death effective November 1st 1888 aged ninety eight years old making him one of longest serving township clerk ever! One can only imagine how busy those days must have been back when court times averaged six hours per day! A major event that took place during Judge Ladd's tenure happened October 3rd 1840 when over sixty people gathered to hear Governor Andrew Johnson speak on new state Constitution issues related to voting rights referendum proposal put forth by Henry Clay Johnston who later became Ulysses S Grant’s Secretary Of State after winning election against Adams’ running mate Van Buren but failed to gain popular support within Congress due mainly because large segments of Northern Democratic Party opposed Johnson’s southern expansionist policies despite their having supported him initially through Senatorial candidates thus paving way for Grant becoming President four months later following Jefferson Davis’ assassination & assumption Of Office! Although not exactly related to Gardnerville but just prior & contemporaneous with visit by President Oakhurst some eighteen miles away from town center @Mobile Depot & significant legal action taken involving several thousand citizens challenging recently ratified Constitution provisions governing voting rights thereby helping lead ultimately TOGrant’s election victory over Van Burenisman home countryman
Gardendale was founded in 1822 by James Gardendale and his family. The town was named for General Andrew Jackson, who had been president when the town was founded. In 1827, the town of Gardendale became a county seat, and in 1861 it became a city.
