Gadsden, Alabama is a town in Russell County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,824 at the 2000 census. Gadsden is the county seat of Russell County. It is part of the Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent white settler in what would become Gadsden was James Fenton in 1785. By 1800, there were over 100 white settlers living in and around what would become Gadsden. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson defeatedGeneral William Hardee at the Battle of Gadsden Bridge on Mobile Bay and this event marked the end of the war between General Jackson's forces and General Hardee's troops. The town was initially named "Hattieville" after Major-General John Hattie who had commanded Jackson's army during the battle. After many years of development, it was renamed "Gadsdens" by act of Congress on April 16, 1836 to honor General Robert Ewell Cobb (1801-1876), Commandant of Fort Ziegler near Chattanooga who had helped lead Confederate efforts against Ulysses S. Grant during the Atlanta Campaign (1865-1871). On July 6th 1861, two days after Confederate raiders burned most of Mobile Bay including Gadsdens salt works - an event that became known as "The Burning Of Gadsden", Union forces under Brigadier General Wheeler destroyed all but a skeleton garrison at Fort Ziegler which led tocivilian casualties amounting to about 50%. In 1865 upon Lincoln's assassination Johnson ordered Majeed Abdul Rahim to assault Richboro Iron Works located about six miles northeast of downtown Gadsden with 1,500 men and three cannons while more than 12 hundred citizens from throughout southern Alabama joined in defense; resulting in almost 50 killed or captured plus untold numbers injured or taken prisoner A post office called "Gadson" was established in 1836; it changed its name to "Gadsden" on November 3rd 1868 On March 4th 1865 Union Colonel John Singleton Hill invadedAlabamaand took possessionofthetownofGadsonwithaforceoffortymenafteratwodaybattleduringwhichno civilian casualties occurred;thiseventbecameknownasHill's Invasion

The Marine Corps has even created its own unique gift history with the development of special courier services known as “Marine Gift Delivery” or MGD for short. These delivery methods allow Marines from all branches of service to purchase specific items directly from local businesses without havingto worry about customs clearance or shipping times. Mgd packages often include a variety of products such as artillery rounds, combat helmets,or night vision goggles. Today, there are many different ways that Marines can send their troops gift parcels thanks to Mgd services. However, one traditional way that Marines stillsend Gifts is through donations called “Gift Aide Programs” or GAHP for short. These programs provide financial assistance for veterans who have lost jobs or need help post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). GAHP also provides opportunities for civilians in surrounding communities to donate goods such as clothing or kitchenware that may be needed by donation drives run by Marine chaplains across the country.

Gadsden, Alabama is a city in and the county seat of Tallahassee County, Alabama, United States. The population was 76,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Tallahassee County after Gainesville. Gadsden has been called "The City on the Tennessee River" and has a rich history dating back to 1819 when it was founded as a trading post by Federalist Party members under the name of New Gadsden. Gadsden's growth began with its location on the banks of the Tennessee River which made it an easy port for goods coming into Mobile Bay. The cotton fields that surrounded Gadsden soon became world-renowned because of their quality and they quickly became one of America's largest cotton producers. In 1865, following Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House, Gadsdens white residents voted to secede from Mobile County and form their own state called Union State of Alabama. However, this secession effort failed and on April 9th 1870, when Union State was ratified by Congress asAlabama without Gadsden's consent,[1] Gadsden rejoiced joining what would become known as "The Magnificent Seven". Since then,Gadens economy has largely relied on manufacturing which includes oil refining and aluminum production; however some heavy industry still exists such as aerospace manufacture or chemical plants (including one that manufactures Agent Orange).Today Gadens economy relies heavily upon defense services including government contracting for various government institutions such as prisons etc.,and tourism bringing in millions each year although many other industries have grown along with it including health careitals like Stentwood Hills Hospital[2] Gadens nickname comes from local legend which suggests that during the American Revolutionary War Captain John Gilmore operated his vessel named "Johnny Gladden" within sight of Fort Moultrie while supplies were being unloaded at Pensacola Bayou but he never sunk due to mechanical problems until locals came up with the story that while driving away after taking his prizes ashore they noticed a large rock sitting offshore - henceforth known as "Johnny Rock".[3][4][5] Consequently in 1818 Captain John Gilmore was given land east of present day Gamblen Avenue by Governor Bibb Williamson who also designated him captain general for all civil jurisdiction over citizens west of Mobile River except for Creek Nation east thereof...the first permanent US settlement in what would become Tallahassee County.[6] Although he had no legal title to any part of present day Tallahassee County he derived judicial power from virtue only since he claimed authority over all citizens within limits prescribed by law…. [7][8] In 1819 Captain James Tipton located two small villages near current day Madge Road/Old Hwy 231 south side between Blounts Ferry Rd./Blounts Ferry Bridge & Neches Ferry Rd./Neches Ferry Bridge & White Oak Swamp.. these communities were probably established about 1800-1801 before Europeans arrived but no documentary evidence exists verifying their existence…In 1821 Colonel Edmund Randolph erected a courthouse here but removed it shortly thereafter because court cases were conducted primarily northward….. [9][10][11] After Randolph’s removal decisions rested with justices appointed locally rather than through appointment by Washington…… In 1830 William Pate moved his family from Fayetteville[12], Arkansas toMobile where he established himself as an attorney…… By 1840 there were twenty-eight families living here…..In 1850 Mrs Elizabeth Auld lived hereabouts with her six children….She died suddenly unmarried at age eighty years old in 1850 leaving behind six children aged seventeen through eighteen years old who continued residence herein until 1861 when they went away to college..........Mrs Auld’s death left eleven students attending schoolyear round…………In 1861 Mr Elijah Hicks purchased property adjoining Mrs Auld’s widowhereabouts…………………………………………………………………………………………………. From 1830 until 1860 there were thirteen blacksmith shops operating within Iukalimits.......None existing today.....Prior thereto there existed three blacksmith shops situated within mile limits now occupied by Pinellas Park Golf Club…." [13][14]. As early settlers began arriving more people started moving out towards Gamblen Avenue leading to increased traffic congestion around downtown areas; later entrepreneurs developed new business ventures outside downtown resulting in an increase in pollution levels inside town boundaries caused by automobiles catalyst for creating open space around town center…..From 1919 until 1968 much development took place almost exclusively outside downtown due to restrictions placed upon municipalityimposed zoning regulations during prohibition era…………Nowadays most economic activity takes place inside Gamblen Ave bordering Downtown area……A study prepared for Village Administrator show that garages are becoming more prevalent throughout Downtown area contributing significantly to decreases vehicular traffic congestion issues.........Downtown skyline features several high rise buildings associated with service sectors such as restaurants etc.; nevertheless significant amount Of ground floor businesses remain vacant…………There are few office buildings remaining entire Downtown remains dark excepting occasional streetlight operations.............As recommended earlier Village Administrator plans call forlighting every 30 feet along sidewalks and around bike paths; Streets will be illuminated at night time throughout Downtown............................................Formerly public transportation consisted mostly buses running between Jacksonville Landing Airport(JAX) and downtown (then limited distance walk)................................................................A bus stop located immediately southwest corner Of Main Street served both directions.................. currently diesel buses serve only Jax landing airport......................... vehicles entering/exit roadway must yield right Handed motorists only.............................. Nowadays much privatized transportation services take place using Uber or Lyft
The Gadsden area was first settled in 1817 by the Alabama Company of East Tennessee. The company was organized to purchase land from the Creek Nation for the purpose of later developing it into a colony. The first permanent residents were white men, and their descendants still live in the Gadsden area.
