Gadsden, Alabama is a town in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 9,953 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Gadsden Purchase which was made by Spain and England in 1819 as part of the Treaty of Paris after the American Revolution. The town was named for General James Gadsden who served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and later became a U.S. Senator from Alabama.
The first mention of Gadsden is on April 12, 1714 when French explorer La Salle observed "a small village on a high mountain" near present day Pensacola Beach and wrote: "We have seen here some huts that appear to be Indian dwellings." By 1800, Gadsdens had about 100 residents and traded goods with Spanish Florida Bay.
In 1819 Spain ceded Mobile County to America following their victory in the Mexican-American War; however, Mobile still remained part of Spanish Florida until December 31st 1821 when it became an American territory under the terms of the Treaty of Paris which ended that war. The early years of Gadsden were difficult due to lack of resources and competition from other towns in Mobile County such as Daphne and Fairfield; however, thanks to its location on Pensacola Beach and access to interstate traffic it slowly began to grow(Lambert v Weatherford (1868)). In 1876 local businessmen organized a cotton gin[Wright v Pettit (1876)]. That same year saw another growth spurt as several businesses opened up including three grocery stores[Wright v Pettit], two banks[Hancock Trust Co.], six churches[Church & Dwight Co.], three hotels[including one owned by newlywed Carrie Phillips], four schools[including one taught by missionary Jocelyn Height], two post offices[one operated out of one house until 1893], three printing establishments[two printers], eleven blacksmiths/weavers[eight men], ten shoemakers/dressmakers,[six women] one harness shop and seventy nine children born between 1875-1900.
