The United States Air Force has a rich history in Gadsden, Alabama. The USAF was founded on February 14, 1947 by President Harry Truman as the United States Air Forces in Korea. The first plane to fly over Gadsden was an F-84G Thunderchief jet fighter plane. The airfield at Gadsden Army Air Base was built during World War II and is now home to the Maxwell AFB Tactical Training Wing. In 1951, General Curtis LeMay became the first American military Commander of USAF Central Asia. He envisioned a global empire that would include all of Eurasia and Africa, and he named Gadsden Air Force Base in his honor. In 1964, General John Hitt became Commanding General of USAF Europe and renamed it Maxwell AFB in his honor. This base hosted NATO exercises from 1995 until 2001 when it was closed due to budget cuts by George W. Bush’s administration. Since its establishment, the USAF has played a significant role in both peacekeeping efforts and deterrence against potential adversaries around the world. Its squadrons have flown missions such as Operation Provide Comfort which responded to natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina;Operation Neptune’s Spear which responded to attacks on U.S embassies throughout East Africa;and Operation Enduring Freedom which helped support operations against Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan. In 2010, after more than 50 years of service, the last squadron of Boeing E-3 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft assigned to Strategic Airlift Command (SAC) retired from active duty at Maxwell AFB effective October 1st, 2010 under Operation Golden Eagle participants program directive 5200A/1-105009 (the “Golden Eagle Retirees”). The present day USAF is made up of more than 6600 members organized into 3 corps:Air Education and Training Command (AETC), Military Airlift Command (MAC), and Special Operations Division (SOD). Each corps provides unique capabilities essential for conducting air warfare operations anywhere in the world today or tomorrow . The Gadsden Air National Guard is a unit of the United States Air Force. The unit was first activated on October 1, 1947 as the Alabama Air National Guard. It was redesignated in 1970 as the 6th Airlift Squadron, Gadsden AAF and again in 1992 as the 5th Airlift Squadron, Gadsden AFB. In 1998 it was reactivated as an airlift squadron at Eglin AFB and has since served as that base's primary aerial refueling squadron. The squadron also provides passenger service to Eglin AFB with its C-130H/J Hercules aircraft.
Gadsden is a city in Alabama, United States. The population was 17,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Butler County. Gadsden is bordered by Mobile Bay to the north and east, Tuscaloosa County to the south, and Butler County to the west. The town of Gadsden was founded in 1818 by General James Wilkinson as an agricultural community on a peninsula formed by two tidal creeks flowing into Mobile Bay. By 1850 Gadsden had developed into a small commercial center with three general stores, several churches, and a schoolhouse. In 1871 Gadsdens incorporation as a municipality made it one of Alabama's first cities. In 1907 Gadsden became home to Randolph Air Force Base, which served as the primarybase for USAF operations in Southwest Asia during World War II. The base closed in 1991 but portions of it remain extant as part of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst (JBLA). In 2007 JBLA merged with Fort Worth Air Force Base to formFort Worth–Arlington International Airport (FORT WORTH AIP). According to the 2010 census, Gadsden has 17,868 residents; 8% black or African American; 83% white; 1% Hispanic or Latino; 2% Asian/Pacific Islander; 0% Native American/Alaska Native; and 3% other race or ethnicity

Gadsden, Alabama is a city in Mobile County, Alabama, United States. The population was 31,564 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mobile County and home to the University of South Alabama. The region that now includes Gadsden was first populated by the Creek people and later by European-American settlers. In 1836, John C. Calhoun, then a senator from Georgia and future president of the United States, purchased land in what is now Gadsden from General Robert E. Lee for $10 per acre. He named his new town after General Lafayette because he believed Lafayette would be hailed as a hero in America if he lived there. In 1837–38 Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter surveyed all of Mobile Bay and its environs for the Ulysses S. Grant military expedition against Mexico under President James K. Polk Jr.. When Grant arrived at Fort Brooke on November 8, 1837, he discovered that Spanish forces had landed two days earlier near Gadsden with orders to capture any American vessels they could find within reach before returning home. After conferring with Porter about possible countermeasures against such an attack—most notably using cannon fire on apparently unsuspecting Spanish sailors boarding American ships—Grant ordered his army into action on December 4th without consulting Porter or waiting for results from Dixon Porter's survey work; these measurements are known as "Dixon's Donuts". After Mexican forces destroyed Fort Brooke on December 21st1837[1], General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna advanced upon Gadsden with 9500 men while Commodore John Denny led 5000 naval personnel ashore to protect friendly citizens and garrison supplies ashore; Santa Anna soon surrounded and destroyed Captain Aiken's Marines stationed at Drewry's Bluff aboard USS Constitution (1795), which caused much public outrage throughout North America[2]. On January 17th1838 Mexican troops burned down buildings in downtown Gadsden[3] after learning that Patterson had abandoned his offer to open negotiations when news reached him of Banks' defeat near Pensacola two days earlier[4]. A monument marking this event still stands today atop Courthouse Square in downtown Gadsdan
The town of Gadsden was founded in 1821 by General Robert E. Lee and his wife, Martha Ann Jones. The town grew rapidly during the antebellum period, becoming a significant center for cotton production. In 1851, Gadsden became the capital of Alabama after it was moved from Montgomery. The city experienced some growth during the Progressive Era, with new construction and industrialization taking place. However, during World War II Gadsden declined as a result of its strategic location within the Confederacy and its lack of resources. It reopened in 1945 as an agricultural center thanks to government support.
