On Dec. 10, 1941, the United States Air Force deployed the first gift to a U.S. military installation in Gadsden, Alabama - an airplane! The plane was christened "Airliner 1" and served as the squadron's main transport for missions over Europe during World War II.
Gadsden, Alabama is a town in Marengo County, Alabama, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mobile–Troy Metropolitan Statistical Area. Gadsden is known for its Confederate battle flag flying atop a pole outside of the courthouse and as the home of The Gadsden Chronicle newspaper. The first white person to live in Gadsden was John Frazier who came here in 1815 from Georgia. In 1832, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters to this town after his victory over Napoleon Bonaparte at New Orleans. After Jackson's death in 1845, Gadsdens citizens voted to remove the Confederate battle flag from their capitol building and fly it instead at a nearby military cemetery near downtown. In 1865, when Mobile became an open port and cotton prices increased because of new railroads being built through Tuscaloosa County, businessmen developed Gadsden into a small commercial center with several stores and two banks. By 1870 there were ten businesses in Gadsden with seventy-six people employed full time. A new courthouse was built in 1872 which still stands today as one of Mobile's most popular tourist attractions. The old courthouse burned down on December 8th, 1889 but was rebuilt within weeks using local materials and by local labor using money donated by residents throughout the county During World War II many civilians living near naval airfields were displaced by Japanese troops during their invasion of Southern Alabama imprisoning many men without trial or release until they died from starvation or disease In 1951 the town post office closed because so few mail orders had been sent out that it would not have been possible to keep up with demand . Mayor Artis Sills suggested that if no other business wanted to come into town then they should close their doors too because "Gadsonians are used to having things done for them". However some businesses did open up including J C Meyers Hardware Store which continued operation until 1975; Mr & Mrs Hennessey store which opened in 1959; L B Smith store which opened in 1961; Mrs White’s grocery store which opened in 1965; Golden Nugget restaurant founded by Clarence “Crazy Legs” Graveson on May 25th 1966 inside what is now BP gas station; and First Baptist Church established on November 26th 1966 adjacent to Holmes Elementary School

After the war, Gadsden became a major center for education and industry. It has since declined in importance, but retains a strong historical presence.
