Fort Payne was founded in 1839 by General Andrew Jackson and Confederate General Robert E. Lee as a base of operations for their respective armies. The town quickly became a center of trade and culture for the area, and its residents were known for their coffee. In 1875, Fort Payne became an all-black military post and began production of its own coffee. Fort Payne was a Confederate fortification located in present-day Fort Payne, Alabama. It was built in 1861 as part of the Mobile Campaign and Siege, during the American Civil War. The fortifications were abandoned in 1865, after Union troops captured Mobile. The fortifications at Fort Payne were first built to protect Mobile from Confederate attack. The fortifications consisted of a series of forts around the city, with an additionalfort west of the river near what is now downtown Mobile. The forts were manned by Confederate soldiers under the command of Major General Nathaniel Pate. In 1862, Union forces began their siege of Mobile. On October 26th, Union forces landed at Beaufort Landing on the west bank of Mobile Bay and began their march towards Fort Payne. On November 1st, Union forces reached Fort Payne and began besieging it. The defenders refused to surrender and fought until they were forced out by artillery fire from the nearby forts. By November 8th, Union forces had captured all but one battery of guns from Fort Payne; however, they still held control over much of downtownMobile. On December 12th, 1862, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered his army northward toward Atlanta; this move allowed Union forces to capture much strategic territory within easy reach of Atlanta without having to fight a pitched battle. As a result of this strategic retreats eastward across Georgia (and into Tennessee), Confederate General Jackson was able to bring most or all his army upriver into Mississippi Territory in time for winter quarters; these areas south of Memphis would fall into Union hands after Jackson's departure from Chattanooga on January 1st 1863. Despite being surrounded by enemy troops inside his own castle walls (which he had not been able to reinforcement since arriving in Tennessee), rebel general Joseph Johnston decided that suicide would be more intelligent than allowing defeat onetime Rear Admiral John Farragut's fleet and army blockading him at Richmond portage on December 5th 1863 would be sure death for him/his people - Johnston surrendered instead becoming an POW at Camp Johnson near Durham CountyNC before being exchanged forUnion Captain John Sappington less than two months later on January 9th 1864
