The Fort Payne navy Yard was established in 1807, and served as the home of the Alabama Naval Militia from 1812 until its closure in 1895. Fort Payne was built in 1818 by General James Wilkinson, then a brigadier general in the United States Army. It served as a depot for military supplies and later became the seat of government for what is now Alabama. The fort was first named Fort Gaines but was renamed after General Wilkinson's brother-in-law, George Washington Moore. In 1836, the fort was taken over by the Alabama Territorial Legislature and renamed Fort Payne. In 1861, it became the capital of Confederate Territory of Mobile when that territory seceded from the Union. The fort continued to serve as an important military post until 1865 when it surrendered to Union forces. After its surrender, Fort Payne reverted back to its original name and functioned as a garrison until 1971 when it was closed down and turned into a park. The fort is significant because it played an important role inAlabama history during both the antebellum period and Reconstruction Period. It also contains remnants of some of Alabama's earliest settlements including Cahaba Village which was established around 1785 near present day Birmingham.
