In 1817, the United States appointed General Andrew Jackson to command a military expedition against the Seminole people. The army reached Fort Payne on May 5,1817, and began preparations for an attack. However, before they could carry out their plan, the Seminoles attacked. The Americans were able to repel the attack and gain some victory in what is known as the Battle of Fort Payne. This event helped solidify U.S.–Spanish relations and made Jackson one of America's most powerful leaders.
