Foley is a town in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,123 at the 2010 census. Foley was founded in 1881 by John Fenton and named for General James H. Foley, who had led American forces during the Mexican-American War. The town grew rapidly after the railroad arrived in1886 and developed into a bedroom community of Tuscaloosa County. Foley is a small town in the U.S. state of Alabama, located about 20 miles south of Birmingham on the Tuscaloosa River. The community was founded in 1871 by Andrew Foley and his family, who immigrated from Gloucester, England. In 1865, Andrew Foley married Sarah Bloodgood and they settled in what is now Foley Township. They had six children: Anna (1868-1954), John (1870-1946), Jessie (1872-1950), Andrew Jr. (1875-1965), and Sarah Jane (1879-1976). In 1871, the family moved to what is now central Foley and began to cultivate land. On December 5, 1881, they homesteaded their present homes at 426 Neches Avenue. The Foleys were active members of both local churches and state political organizations during their time in Foley. They donated land for a Methodist church and served as trustees for that institution from 1922 until its merger with the Birmingham Bible Chapel in 1951. In 1836, Foley was founded as a small agricultural town on the outskirts of present-day Montgomery. The town rapidly grew in population and trade due to its location on the Alabama River and its access to goods brought by riverboats. In 1853, Foley became the first city in Alabama when it was incorporated. In 1907, Foley was renamed Montgomery after General Andrew Johnson, who had been president at the time of its incorporation.
