Florence, Alabama is a small city located in the extreme south-central region of the United States. The city was founded by pioneers who arrived from Tennessee in 1819. Florence was named for Florence, Italy where they originated from. The early residents of Florence were farmers and hunters who hunted game and fished in the Mobile River. They also built homes and businesses near what is now downtown Florence. The city's first post office was established in 1827 and its first store was opened in 1830. In 1837, the town voted to incorporate as a village and name it Florence Plantation after their owner, Colonel John Fenton Wiley (1785-1859). At that point, both Union general Ulysses S Grant and Confederate general Vann McAllister joined forces to pursue General Ewell northward through central Alabama into Mississippi Territory which ended up resulting in his surrender at Newtonville on October 20th 1865. Aftermath of the war saw much destruction throughout central Alabama including much of Florence with upwards of 100% loss of life according to historian Hinton Rowan: "No other community suffered so great an extent during this conflict." In 1865, Florence became part ofthe newly formed Reconstruction South following Abraham Lincoln's inauguration as President of America; This period marked a time when African Americans were given political rights which led to integration into white society beginning in Alabama as well as elsewhere across America. As black people regained their rights following Reconstruction there began a rapid increase in business ownership within cities like Florence involving such entrepreneurs as Mabel Bowen Simmons (1883-1968), Drayton Floyd Willis (1886-1966), Otis Wingate Woodruff (1900-1976) among others; these men helped revive downtown Florences economy which increased tourism opportunities for locals along with creating new jobs for local citizens during this time period while helping integrate black families into white society once again.
