The Florence, Alabama National Guard was organized on December 12, 1917. The unit was first called the Citizens' Volunteer Infantry and then the Florence Sentinel Infantry. decided to change its name to the Florence National Guard on May 6, 1919. The unit is now known as the Alabama National Guard. The organization of the national guard in America began with a call for volunteers by President Woodrow Wilson on April 15, 1915. On November 9th of that year, General John J. Pershing ordered all American armies into action against Spain in World War I. This call for volunteers triggered a mass movement of young Americans across state lines to serve their country in whatever capacity they could be called upon to do- from guarding homes and towns to fighting in battle overseas. More than 11 million men and women responded to Wilson's call for service, making America one of the most mobilized countries in history at that time. Volunteer militia units were created throughout America during World War I as part of an effort by President Wilsonto provide manpower for wartime purposes withoutitating any enlisted recruits or breaking military traditions which discouraged conscription into volunteer forces under American rule at that time (see also draft). These soldiers were not actually drafted but rather volunteered their services instead of being required to serve in the military (the Selective Service Act had been passed two years earlier). In 1916 Congress authorized stateside volunteer militias if they deemed such organizations necessary "for public defense" as well as providing financial assistance "in case of war emergency." By 1917 there were over 100 thousand militiamen organized nationwide including 3 battalions within the Florence Sentinel Infantry Regiment; 2 rifle companies (1 each from Mobile and Huntsville); 1 artillery regiment; 1 battalion machine gun squadron; 1 battalion aviation squadron; 4 detachments cavalry brigade; and various support agencies (such as ambulance corps) A total of 5 officers and 47 enlisted men served with distinction in Forrest's Texas Ranger Battalion during World War I while stationed at Camp Bowie near El Paso County, Texas between October 1914-November 1918 inclusive In addition there were numerous individual members who served their country intermittently during this era including: James Wetherbee who served with distinction with Company K 20th Kansas Infantry Volunteers During World War I - Killed In Action September 26 1918 along side his brother Will Wetherbee when his unit responded to our old friend Tomahawk Ridge Campaign near San Antonio TX In 1919 after returning home from WWI James Auld was commissioned Second Lieutenant Colonel US Army National Guardsmen From east Tennessee Commanded by Maj Gen John Pemberton When deployed outside Shelbyville AR While serving under command duty With First Brigade United States Cavalry Division
