Florence, Alabama (formerly Mobile) is the largest city in the state of Alabama and one of its most populous cities. With a population of over 630,000 as of 2010, Florence is also the second-largest city in Alabama after Birmingham. The area now known as Florence was first settled by the Cherokee in the 18th century. The town was named for Giovanni Battista Fontana, an Italian traveler who visited Mobile in 1784. The downtown area includes three intertwining streets: Court Street/US 20E, Broadwalk/Alabama State Route 472 and Magnolia Avenue/Alabama State Route 422. These streets are major thoroughfares that run through both downtown areas and suburban neighborhoods to links them together. The municipality was formed on December 3, 1837 whenMobile County was split into two parts - Mobile County and Baldwin County - with Florence being part of the new Mobile County. In 1850, when Baldwin County was established, it included most of present-day Florence except for what is now Midtown City limits west of US 72 south to US 31 north. In 1861 during the American Civil War, Confederate forces besieged Union troops at Fort Sumter before surrendering on April 12; this event led to Florence becoming an important military base for Confederate forces throughout much of southern Alabama during the war effort. A cotton gin was built by James Wirtz in 1863 along what is now Court Street near what is today's Municipal Building housing courtrooms and other government functions; this gin helped contribute significantly to economic development in Florence during that time period. In 1865 General John Crayton commanded Union troops at Second Battle of Bull Run outside Knoxville; while there he ordered General Forrest's army to march northeastward across Waller Creek Bridge into Cooke County seeking relief from Confederate forces under Jubal Early. Forrest's army reached Cumberland Gap just north of Chattanooga before turning back due to heavy losses incurred at First Battle of Chattanooga on October 15; this event resulted in Georgia Governor Nathan Bedford Forrest awarding a $100 bonus to General John Crayton for his successful campaign against Confederate forces within Tennessee. Hispanic Americans made up about 22% (2005 est.)of total Florentine population according to Census 2000 data; white Floridians constituted 78% or more than their share among all residents age 25 years or older from 2000 data. According to 2010 census figures, African Americans make up 8% or less outnumber Spanish-speaking residents (<1%). African Americans have been working increasingly within white households since passage of Brown v Board Of Education et al., desegregation laws which began taking effect in 1954 following a Supreme Court ruling in Plessy v Ferguson.
