The area that makes up Florence has been inhabited by the Creek and Seminole people since before European arrival. In 1795 General Andrew Jackson ordered all Creeks living east of Talladega to leave their lands because they were not considered part of the United States. For more than two centuries after this event the Creek people lived off hunting opportunities on lands now encompassed by Florence. Settlement began in earnest in 1821 when John chanced upon a piece of land along US 31 that he thought would be ideal for farming purposes; it became known as Eufaula Township . platted in 1832 as part of Mobile County . By 1840 most residents were white men who engaged in agriculture or fur trading; during this time white women also started to arrive from Georgia to work on plantations near Montgomery . In 1845 three men - Moultrie , Bealland & Sanford - developed what is now downtown Florence ; at first they used their profits from fur trading to support themselves but soon realized that interracial trade could only sustain them if they built a center where goods could be traded legally and without fear of being raided or seized by neighbors . A meeting called to decide on plans for such a center was held at the home of Wm Fenton on December 10th , 1846 with 45 participants including Captains Fountain & Hawkins ; Hampton later served as Mayor from 1861-1865 On March 2nd , 1850 Captain John Fountain donated 5 acres (20 hectares) northeast corner lot #2 (now King Street ) east side block #27 on present day Elm Street between Gulf Road northbound (now I-10 southbound lanes) and State Route 231 westbound (now US 131), then bounded by today’s Winchester Avenue NE/southwest corner lot #1E/northwest corner lot #7A/east side block #3B behind Stonington Baptist Church northeast corner lot adjacent to present day Union Chapel homeowner’s association property line with street addresses shown below: Lot 27 – east side block #27; Lot 1E –northwest corner lot #7A; Lot 3B – southwest corner block behind Stonington Baptist Church northeast corner lot adjacent to present day Union Chapel homeowner’s association property line
