The area that now makes up Florence was first settled by people who arrived from the British Isles in the early 1800s. In 1819, Captain John Fenton charted a route from Mobile to Tuscaloosa and named the settlement Fort Fenton after himself and his family. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1830s as cotton farming became more common in southeastern Alabama. By 1840, Florence had become one of the largest towns in Marshall County. During Reconstruction era, Florence became known as a center for black political activism and education. After many attempts by white supremacists to drive out black residents, including several raids on homes and businesses throughout 1860-1861, violence between groups of African Americans gradually tapered off until 1865 when Union troops burned down most of downtown Florence while seeking refuge from Confederate forces occupying nearby Atlanta. In 1870, Florence's population reached 2,000 people and it continued to grow through the 1880s until it reached its peak at 3,148 in 1910.
