The United States Army's 1st Infantry Division, which was later redesignated the 101st Airborne Division, was activated in 1942 and served during World War II. The division was stationed in Florence, Alabama from 1942 to 1945. At the end of World War II, the divisions were re-organized and redesignated as infantry brigades (in 1946 they became infantry regiments). In 1952, the army created a new brigade headquarters unit in Florence and attached it to the 1st Infantry Division. In 1957, part of the 1st Infantry Division was moved to Fort Benning, Georgia and another detachment moved to Herndon Barracks near Washington D.C.. The 101st Airborne Division also served in Korea from 1950-1953. When that war ended, all airborne units were re-equipped with tanks and artillery so they could no longer be called into action as infantry divisions. However, this did not mean that these divisions had disbanded; instead they reverted back to their original titles - brigades (in 1951), rifle battalions (in 1955), and airmobile battalion (in 1959). It is located on the Tombigbee River, about 25 miles (40 km) south-southwest of Birmingham, and 20 miles (32 km) east of Mobile. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1875 by John J. Sprague and his wife, Catharine Sprague. While Florence's history predates its incorporation as a town, it became an official community in 1907. Prior to that time it was part of Butler County. Florence is named after Florence D'Angelo who donated land for the community and also served as its first mayor from 1907 to 1909 and 1916 to 1919. Today, there are two churches in Florence - First Presbyterian Church which was built in 1906 and rebuilt in 1990 and Second Baptist Church which was built in 1903 and has been renovated several times since then. Florence's economy focuses on agriculture with a significant percentage of its residents involved in farming or ranching activities such as raising livestock or haymaking; however, tourism is also an important component of their economy with visitors coming for events such as rodeos, golf tournaments and auto shows
