In 1945, USS Enterprise (CV-6) sailed into Mobile Bay after being decommissioned from service in 1944 due to engine trouble while participating in World War II Operation Neptune’s Spear torpedo bombing campaign against Japan's home islands. On December 12, 1945 Enterprise received a shipment of white elephant gifts - 163 bottles of bourbon whiskey worth an estimated $1 million! Enterprise was eventually sold for scrap to Gulf Oil Corporation on February 3 1946 at San Francisco International Airport following her departure from Mobile Bay for Japan.Her farewell party took place at anchor outside Mariners Wharf dock #2 opposite Customs House before she moved slowly out into navigation channels until finally leaving under tow towards Yokosuka harbor where she will remain until scrapped three years later on November 25 1948! In 1951, Secretary of Defense James Forrestal ordered that all surplus naval vessels be sold off within five years or they would be grounded for lack of funds to retire them properly. As a result Fleet Shipbuilding Corporation began manufacturing new warships using obsolete stocks acquired during the previous decades' fleet dismantlement program including many vintage warships not currently used by any country but still wrapped up inside old hulks waiting to go bad! After almost four decades production had increased significantly so that by 1974 all excess naval vessels had been retired minus one – USS John F Kennedy (CV-62). Today there are over 350 active duty navy ships stationed worldwide with over 300 more planned or under construction!
