The National Guard of Fairhope, Alabama was first organized on November 15, 1939. It was the result of a merger between the Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department and the Mobile National Guard which had been organized on December 10, 1938. The first duty of the new National Guard was to help protect public property in the town. On November 29th, 1941, President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered all armed forces to activate in time for World War II. The Fairhope Volunteer Fire Department became part of the Mobile Army Quarters and began providing service to military members from January 1st 1942 until September 30th 1946 when it merged with Dover Volunteer Fire Company #2 to form Dover-Fairhope VolunteerFireDepartment#4. During this time period patriotic programs were held at various locations in town including a Fourth of July parade and re-enactment of Battle of Gettysburg which took place on October 4th 1945 at Veterans Park. In 1969, after more than 40 years as a volunteer fire department, Dover-FairhopeVolunteerFireDepartment#4 merged with Hoover Township Volunteer Fire Department to form Hoover Township Volunteer Fire Department #1 which continues today as one of Alabama's most active fire departments providing emergency services throughout rural areas within Jefferson County and portions of Cullman County

Fairhope is a small town in Alabama, located on the Gulf of Mexico about sixty miles south of Mobile. The population was 653 at the 2000 census, and 727 at the 2010 census. It is part of Mobile County. The town formed when a group of farmers and businessmen decided to move from Tuscaloosa to Fairhope after watching the area be developed around Mobile Bay. The original settlers were Methodists, but by 1873 they had founded a Presbyterian church which still meets today in Fairhope. The economy in Fairhope has been based largely on agriculture since before World War II; however, during that time there have also been several businesses established in the town including an engineering company and a seafood processing plant. In recent years, some business development has occurred in the form of new homes and a shopping mall which opened in 2006. The first post office was established at Fairhope on November 1, 1871, and it operated until it was discontinued on December 31, 1912. After that date, mail service was provided by boat fromMobile Bay until 1925 when railroad service began providing passenger train transportation between Mobile and Birmingham via Daphne duPont station.
