The Coast Guard has been in operation in Fairhope, Alabama since 1937. The Coast Guard was founded as the Mobile Harbor Patrol to keep navigation safe and protect the citizens of Mobile Bay. During that time period they have responded to more than 1 million emergencies including: Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; earthquakes; lightning strikes; gas spills; wildfires; tornadoes; floods; ice storms; hurricanes Georges & Wilma (a category 5 storm)…the list goes on! One of the most notable things that has come about from the co-operation between state troopers and coast guard is organized crime being stopped at sea. This happened due to a tip from a citizen about an Egyptian smuggling ring travelling through Mobile Bay using small boats manned by smugglers dressed like locals looking for passage out of Africa during the dry season
