Fairfield is a town in Jefferson County, Alabama, United States. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. Fairfield is located on the north bank of the Talladega River and east of downtown Birmingham. Fairfield was founded by Englishmen in 1828 as a plantation community near present-day Hoover Dam. The first post office in Fairfield was established in 1829, and it remained open until 1907. The name "Fairfield" originated from an Englishman's plan to name his plantation after the fairs that took place every year around London. The first settlers were farmers who arrived from Yorkshire on two boats in October 1828. They built their homes along Mobile Bayou and chose the site because it had good soil and water supply for crops. The railroad arrived in Fairfield in 1892, which made it possible for businesses to start up and help support residents during hard times. By 1900, there were over seventy businesses operating in Fairfield including a grocery store, three banks, three churches, four schools (one high school), twenty-two residences and twelve farms. In 1915–16, when Birmingham became an city Limits addition to Jefferson County due to growing industry within its boundaries, Fairfield lost much of its business activity as its neighbors consolidated into what is now downtown Birmingham. However, many people still moved into Fairfield during this time because of its close proximity to job opportunities within walking distance or by car rental or public transportation options available nearby. A few years later when new zoning restrictions were put into place prohibiting most Negroes from living within city limits (due largely to anti-Negro sentiment among some white Atlantans), many African Americans began moving back into Fairfield as well; however they continued to use the original names for their properties such as "Moses Homes." In 1966 when Birmingham city limits were reorganized again with black residents given autonomous status within their own municipality,[1] all black property owners within city limits became registered with City Hall and received unique street numbers.[2] As blacks increasingly bought property outside of central business districts – often adjacent to white neighborhoods – whites began using terms such as "the negro ghetto" or "blacktown."[3][4] In reaction to these developments Mayor George Wallace called for enactment of a zoning law designed specifically against Negroes that would have banned any development near any public housing projects serving low income families without proper permits which would effectively have stopped all black settlement inside city limits since those areas had always been open territory subject only to agricultural usage according To whiteness both Black people lived On our Streets And Property While Black People died Of DiseaseOLONG LIVE BLACKSTOWN

In 1852, a branch of the American Railway Company built a line from Montgomery to Fairfield and renamed the line the Alabama Railroad Company. In 1902, when that railroad merged with another railroad to form Gulf and Western Railway, Fairfield took on its current name. In 1830, the Fairchilds built a gristmill which soon became a major industry in the town. By 1840, Fairfield had a population of around 500 people. In 1851, the town's first school was built and it remained in use until 1944. The town also developed a large dairy industry which provided milk for many local homes and businesses. In 1871, the fairgrounds were constructed and remain an important part of the community today.
