Fairfield was founded in 1819 by John Fairfield and his wife, Martha. The town was named after the Battle of Gettysburg, where General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union forces. The community grew rapidly due to its location on a major Overland Road artery and its position as a crossroads for travelers headed west or east. By 1840, Fairfield had a population of 1,200 people. In 1852, the town set up its own school system and began to build roads and other infrastructure. A local mill was also established soon afterward to provide goods and services to the community. The Civil War interrupted these activities but not before Fairfield had become known as an important strategic crossroads for Confederate forces moving between Alabama and Georgia. After the war ended in 1865, Fairfield continued to grow rapidly with new businesses establishing themselves here including a grocery store, post office, druggist, hotel/motel and several churches. By 1900, the population had reached 5,000 people and it remained at that level until World War II when it decreased gradually until reaching just under 3,000 residents by 1960 census count. Today only a few buildings from prior eras remain standing in Fairfield – most notably the original courthouse which is now used as an apartment complex.
